Do Gerber daisies survive freezing winters?

I planted a Gerber daisy in front of my house in a shaded area last summer. I did not expect to see it again this year. Today I saw something orange under the leaves of an astilbe that had grown larger from last year. I assumed it was some garbage which often gets left by my lovely neighbors. When I went to pick it up I discovered the Gerber Daisy was growing and had blossomed! I didn't think that was possible, but I never planted one before. Does this happen much in cold regions? We get bitter cold freezing weather for several months in Western NY. I will plant more if they can survive over the winter.
