Does this rug placement look odd?

My husband and I are having a disagreement over the placement of this area rug. It bothers me that the loveseat is not centered under the window or on the rug. I can live with one off-center thing, but both...ugh. I think the rug needs to come sideways (toward the front door) a few more inches.

BUT the husband disagrees strongly, because he wants ample room at the front door for people to walk in (especially during rain/snow) without putting dirty shoes on the rug. I see his point too so I am kind of at a loss as to the best solution.

Leave the rug as is? Move closer to door? Buy an end table to go next to the loveseat (where the basket is) to make that loveseat + table combo at least aligned to the middle of the window?

Also, if anyone has any curtain suggestions to play off of the couches and rug, that would be great! It will be my next task.

Move the rug to the edge of the window. This is why I never purchase rugs with medallions in the center because every additional item like the coffee table then has to be centered. Now your end tables will be half on and half off the rug.

I don't recommend this often, but perhaps a rug the next size smaller would be better for this room since you need to keep a path on the wood floor from the front door.

You are right - it is the medallion in the center that is causing my headache. But I love the design! Oh, first world problems. No more medallion rugs after this.

Can you pull the rug and sofa more the left(just slightly, left as in further away from the window wall) and then center the love seat on the medallion?

I think finishing the room with curtains, etc. would help...

Tems, I am not sure I understand your suggestion. The large couch is already as far left as it can go (the back is against the wall). If we move the loveseat farther left, the left side of it will be blocked by the arm on the other couch.

Er612, that pic looks good! Thanks. Are those the types of curtains you would suggest? We have a nice carved decorative wooden art piece to hang above the couch. (We just haven't pulled it out of storage yet.) It is about the same size as the art square you put in the picture.

Yes I meant to move the sofa and the rug to the "other" left enough so that it doesn't block the arm of the loveseat. I'm not sure if it's work but worth trying I think.

Beverly, thanks for the suggestion. We did pull the rug out a couple inches to line up with the window. It was a good compromise. It is not 100% centered but that brought all of the dark blue coloring in the rug out from under the couch, which I think makes it look much better.

If I do a side table where that basket is now (in order to balance out the loveseat under the window), is there a trick to making it stable half-on/half-off the rug?

Looks good. If the table doesn't have levelers on the bottom, you can probably purchase felt pads at HD or Lowes and apply them to the bottom of the legs that are off the rug. Round accent tables would be good.

I think your next problem is the dead space in the corner where the two armchairs meet.

There are very harsh lines there and something that feels uneasy.

As photos of the entire place was not given is there a way to move the love seat to the opposite side?

If this is not possible I think you need to soften that area with drapes, and large sculptures to take your eye off noticing the dead space.

Can you show us your wooden art that you plan to place above the sofa?
I cannot visualise if it matches the sofas and rug.

Hi Rickster, thanks for the comments. We are still in the process of "moving in." This house was a major rehab project and so far, this living room is the only part that is really livable haha. This is the best layout for the two couches, because one of the other remaining sides is the front door, and the side opposite the window is a hallway to the dining room.

We are nowhere near done with this room yet though, and I agree, right now, it is not too pretty! The corner that is bothering you will eventually have furniture but right now it is storage for some items we don't want the dog to access. I am considering either matching shelving on opposite sides of the sofa, or opposite sides of the loveseat. Just haven't fully decided yet which wall, since both would work. Probably the sofa wall and then have curtains around the window.

The wooden art is still in storage so I cannot take a picture of it right yet, but I will upload one when I can. I think it will go pretty well in this room, to be honest. But my tastes are a bit more for a traditional style than most people I think.
