Chinese redbud root disturbance

My Chinese redbud Avondale has been limbed up to tree form. I removed a large plant at its base in spring and accidentally disturbed a large root. Then growth of the leaves has been about half as many and they are half the size they usually are although it looks healthy enough. Will it recover fully by next spring?

It doesn't have to be a result of root damage. If you removed a large amount of branches for purpose of limbing up you could have weaken the tree that now struggles and the new leaf growth is somewhat stunned. Give it some time and keep it well watered.
