New house, new space, just moved. Scared to jump in decorating cause I don't want to mess up. Welcoming any suggestions

You need is window treatments, which can both control the light and add color. If you find drapes or curtains you like, you can pull colors from those to add more color into the room with pillows, throws, and other accessories.

Existing furniture is staying for now. I do want to add some color. Should I do heavy drapes or sheer? Not sure?

Since you are planning to watch TV in the room, you need blinds of some kind for light control. Then layer drapes over them for color. They don't have to be heavy, because you will be using the blinds for light control.

Pull furniture from wall, add colorful pillows to sofa. Think of you brown as your neutral color. Instead of coffee table decorative poufs for extra seating or a bench. Have fun!

I agree that window treatments will make big difference in your space. If you keep the current arrangement you have, I recommend roman shades or woven wood blinds which are neutral and can work with many design styles and will add a nice texture to your room.

If you are willing to change the layout, then I would recommend placing the sofas perpendicular to the fireplace, opposite each other and away from the wall, and I would move the TV above the fireplace. The photo below shows what I mean.
Lastly, I think adding an area rug with some color that you could pull from for accent pillows would be great. Often times we'll layer a patterned rug on top of the wall to wall carpet like you have.

I would not put too much color in drapes, as you have so many windows, it will chop the room up too much. Instead, opt for one focal point of color over the fireplace, and then cushions to add color on your sofas. I would do tailored roman shades in a neutral color to soften the windows, or the woven wood blinds as Shannon Willey suggests. A few lighter pillows on those brown sofas will do wonders to break up your sea of brown. I agree w PQ, and would also suggest moving your chair to the other side of the fireplace, so it faces the 'L' of the sofas diagonally. Moving your sofas into the room more will allow guests to reach the coffee table ( which would look well at twice the current depth), and the side table could join the grouping, as well.
