LED bulb burning hot.

About a year ago, I replaced all our desk and table lamp bulbs with 60 W LEDs. Now the one in my desk lamp is flickering off and on, and when I attempted to make sure it was screwed into the socket tightly, I realize it was hot. Very hot to the touch. Is this normal? I turned it off, and tried to turn it back on again, but it burns very dimly now. Is this normal for these newfangled bulbs? Could it be a defect in my lamp? The first would be annoying, since these bulbs are so expensive. But the second could burn the house down, I guess. So thanks for any insight.
