Help with lighting over table

last modified: 10 years ago

We are in the middle of a kitchen remodel. The layout of the kitchen has a peninsula between the work area and the dining area. It's a small kitchen in an older home. Because we are short on cabinet space, I kept cabinets overhanging the peninsula, which blocks the natural light from the only window, as well as the light coming from the recessed fixtures in the work area. So the dining area is pretty dark.

For the past umpteen years we have had a ceiling mounted fluorescent fixture, which gave enough light to read by, but not comfortably. We are now looking to update. I am considering this fixture, hung approximately 30 inches above the table.

Will this provide enough illumination for the table as well as the general area? Will be too bright/glaring in our eyes? It's quite a generous number of lumens, but of course you can put it on a dimmer switch. Thanks for any help.
