Hello, thank you for your inquiry. The Portland Solid Wood Bed is a platform bed. A box spring is not necessary but could be used. The top of the mattress will be much higher than the footboard and less of the headboard will be visible. I hope this is helpful to you!

Does this bed have center support underneath? I am interested in this bed but would like to have a trundle stored underneath and need to know if it would have the space.
