repotting in gritty mix

I just finished repotting my citron from regular soil to Al's gritty mix. Once I had it out I noticed that I might want to go with a bigger pot as the roots were starting to fill up, but I didn't have any handy so I used the same one. My question now is that if in a year or so I decide to transplant to a bigger pot, is there anyway to do that without bare rooting it? With regular soil its easy because all the soil sticks together with the roots, but I imagine with the gritty mix it won't stay in one clump together with the roots and I'll end up bare rooting it even if there is no reason to. Any ideas on how to move it to a bigger pot without bare rooting? Also, a similar issue would be that it would be hard to remove the whole thing just to see how much room is left for the roots because it won't stay in one piece when I want to pull it out to check it. Will the gritty mix eventually stick together as one unit like soil does? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
