I had the same problem as you. Hated my ugly very dated fireplace tile. It was less than $500 to buy and have the new tile professionally installed. I removed the old tile myself, chose a rectified matte marble surround and larger honed marble for the hearth, just before my new wooden floors go in. I will be adding a simple mantle shelf after we trim it in white wood and paint the wall a BM Cinder gray. It was surprisingly cheap to buy the tile and about $300 to install. I had some ugly worn and dated brass trim so on a budget, I sanded the black area with steel wool and spray painted it with black HighHeat BBQ paint. Came out beautiful, except I used matt paint, bad idea - go with semi-gloss as I did that. Here are before and not quite done yet pictures. Lastly I spent the money ($150 off season) to have my Fireplace cleaned by a pro, Lindemann Chimney. His inspection and advice was worth every penny so I knew my options well. I am not the original owner so this was a good investment.
