Just moved in!

We just moved in and have some space to fill. We have a 16x15 hearth room that flows in from the kitchen. We to buy some furniture and accessorize this blank canvas. How would we arrange furnishings? What colors could we use? I'm including a picture of the kitchen as well...so you can see the flow.It could also use some real work. Don't judge....I literally moved here yesterday, still unpacking!

We need some more help from you like what style of furnishings do you like? What are your favorite colors and/or do you have anything that will go into these rooms already? Once we know these things, it will be easier for us to help you.

We found these at a nice furniture consignment shop. I like the idea of making this room "cozy" yet stylish. The pieces are an odd shade of leather...terra cotta maybe? I also really like the charcoals and grays that are popular right now. I'm not against repainting either. I really like Restoration Hardware styles, but not necessarily the prices! Dislike: country, too rustic or flowery. Thank you! (Also, I'm not sure how to delete my duplicate post!) :)

Congratulations on your new home! Would you consider putting shelves in the built ins on either side of your fireplace?

I could do that! Never really thought of it...the formal LR has quite a few bookshelves to fill as well. I have just been pulling out what I have unpacked so far. My previous house was much smaller, and I need to purchase most of my furniture.

Oh I'm sure you have lots of unpacking work ahead! Maybe glass shelves, with some lights mounted in the top to give your room ambiance. You scored some nice chairs! Lots of rugs would look nice with those chairs, though I must say I see them with warmer tones and have a hard time imagining them with gray. Maybe a suzani style rug along the lines of the attached pic?

You have a great foundation to work with! Because your leather armchairs are so red (they actually match the flooring really well), I feel like you should probably go for a different color for your walls. Perhaps go for an off-white or light gray, like in this photo below, that would still vibe well with your white trim.

I went ahead and photoshopped a photo of your room with light gray paint on the walls. I would say this is similar to Benjamin Moore's Gray Owl if not a tad lighter.

Because of all the red tones in the room, I would definitely want a rug that would neutralize it.

Because you mentioned that you like Restoration Hardware's style, you should look for furnishings that emphasize natural textures and materials - like wood, metal, etc. A simple rug with texture would be preferable over one with mutiple colors and designs.

Something similar to this rug in terms of color/style. (This one's from West Elm.) I would also recommend perhaps a shag rug, as you said that you wanted something cozy but stylish, but they do tend to shed.

On top of the rug, I would put a coffee table. Because your fireplace is a charcoal color, I would match your coffee table to that. Maybe something similar to this, but definitely one with a wooden texture.

For draperies, you could go two ways - go light or dark. In general, you should always order free fabric swatches to help you decide what color to go with. The following window treatment suggestions are for Belgian linen draperies. You said that you weren't fond of Restoration Hardware's price point - well, these drapes are from the same Belgian linen mill (and the same fabrics), as RH, but at a 1/3 of the price.

Depending on your privacy preferences, there are a plethora of choices that you could go with.

Sheer drapes like the one above would look pretty nice if you don't want much light blockage.

Or you could go for a mist gray tone as well.

I suppose you could also try charcoal colored draperies, but that might be overbearing.
