I would cut those branches right to the trunk- if you don't,they will sprout thickly from there. And a long wait to look good.

Thanks for both of your comments. I went ahead and took the plunge into tree grafting. Watched some videos and ended up following one from India who did bark grafting (as the climate here in Cambodia where I live is about the same). I selected some branches from a mango tree at a local restaurant here that produces delicious fruit, so maybe even get the benefit of that!
We'll see if it's successful...
