Great makeover. You were right, the cabinets look much better without the soffits. Really like the fabric on the doors. I would put the same on the kitchen window maybe just a short valance to really tie it all in. Just a suggestion, switch out the bowl of bananas for a bowl of red apples.

Thank you everyone for the very lovely comments. I would like to add that I posted pics of my kitchen, as well as the budget, so other people (regular folk like me) could see what could be possible without spending more money than many of us make in a year. I love the Houzz website and it is a fabulous source of inspiration, but I do find that the finishings are often very high end, which can be very discouraging when trying to work within a modest budget. I hope that maybe someone will see that with a little bit of paint and a whole lot of help from friends you can still make a lovely living space. The amount we spent on pizza and beer could never repay all the wonderful people who helped us with the project!

Also, I do have extra fabric to make a shade for the kitchen window. I'm just spending too much time at the beach right now to get my sewing machine back out!

Very well done. The only thing I can see that seems out of place in this beautiful kitchen are those three wooden chairs. They seem totally out of place. I think what you need to do is replace them with stools to compliment your updated and modern kitchen. Something similar to the one in the picture below...That way the back of the chairs will not stick out and will provide a more open feel.
