Could spread a lot of molasses (2-5oz per 1000ft) onto the yard (disolved table sugar would work also...or just sugar in spreader!...)... long shot... but it could/should spike microbe/bacteria activity - which will draw nitrogen from the soil/air to balance out their composting activity.

It does depend on the nitrogen source, but in any case it's too late.

If urea, that was flipped over to available ammonia 48 hours after it was watered in--soil bacteria then started to flip it to nitrates. Ammonium nitrate and the like would have been available as soon as it watered in.

Watered in Saturday, it was available no later than Monday (and urea's curve is such that most of it's available in as little as 24 hours, so Sunday).

Now, Tuesday, it's far too late to do anything about it if it burns. Flush it out, rescue what you can, and regroup once the weather starts to change if he needs to reseed.

Yes - at this point only the slow release portion (very small amount <10% typically) would be possibly taken up in the presence of a sugar-induced bacteria spike.

What would be the best way to reseed?
Can he just broadcast seed over the damaged area?

Or does he have to do any special prep work?

Mow short and broadcast. Topdress is optional and I only recommend it if the burnout was pretty complete, but it'll help.

Other than that, water the seed and it will grow.

Hmm I'm getting from this university report http://tinyurl.com/kfpzee4 As I don't don't have much experience in it but it say's to do very little.

For P and K, you're definitely stuck with it. N can be flushed as it washes out fairly easily as urea or nitrate. Ammonium doesn't wash out very easily at all.

It's been a few days now. Was there any immediate change in how it looks?

Wait its a slow release fertilizer right? Why can't you just get it off the lawn instead of watering it in. the pellets should last weeks.
