Big temperature swings in the house

Hi all,

I am wondering if anyone has dealt with big temperature changes in the house, where we constantly need to turn on the heater or the AC to maintain a stable temperature. Mind you, we are in California, in a pretty temperate climate, so it doesn't seem like this should be a problem in the first place.

This is the first house we've had that has a crawl space, so I'm wondering if that might be the issue. Another culprit could be the attic. Could these or other things cause big temperature changes? Thank you.

You have inadequate insulation. Engage the services of an Energy Rater.

Agree with Sophie, you can get an energy audit from your utility supplier usually, they will give you all kinds of hints to save energy and improve efficiency.

When a house cools or heats rapidly it means the insulation is poor or non-existent. This is COMMON in temperate or hot climates where "insulation" is left off the builder's list because it was once thought to be the domain of "cold" climates. It also makes it SUPER cheap to build a house = plenty of savings for builders. And then the trickle down effect means the house is SUPER cheap to sell for the rest of it's life.

Depending on the age of the home, you may have a little bit of insulation or none. Don't be surprised to find "none". In hot areas with old homes this is very, very, very common.

The attic is the first place to look. Heat rises. Which means if it is escaping easily out of the roof you don't have much insulation to begin with. Age and efficiency of windows and doors will also play a HUGE roll in this.

An energy audit will tell you the BIGGEST problem and then list everything else that is a problem. As the homeowner you can then start to remedy these problems one at a time...with the BIGGEST problem being dealt with FIRST.
