its actually pretty common in papaya. its called "Cat face"

The appearance of carpellodic fruits can range from those that resemble female fruits to those that are severely deformed with longitudinal ridges or seams. Carpellodic fruits are generally rounded rather than the more typical pyriform shape and are unmarketable.

BIOLOGY

Carpellody or "cat-face" fruits result when stamens develop abnormally into carpel-like fleshy structures.

Sex expression in hermaphroditic papaya trees is variable and is influenced by environmental factors. The development of carpellodic fruits is favored by low night temperatures in combination with high moisture and nitrogen levels.

EPIDEMIOLOGY

Carpellody is an inherited trait thus careful seed selection can reduce its occurrence.

i like that you have a raised bed. since the drainage is so good, and both banana and papaya like high organic matter, you could add 100 red-wriggler worms, some fruit peels, coffee grounds, grass clippings etc... and raise worms to provide a lot of very rich compost.

That's common in the plant world. As it said fused flowers are the cause and the cause of fused flowers is something was way off when it formed - too cold or too something.

It should taste the same..with a few ridges is all.

Heck,I wouldn't doubt "Buddha's hand citrus got its start that way. You could develop a train of Buddha's Papaya..lol.

greenman62... My "Cat Face" papaya look more like a fish and is a lot uglier than the ones at the link. I'll follow your advice to improve the raised bed and perhaps that would make the "Cat Face" papaya look a little more eatable.

stanofh... This "Cat Face" papaya is just too ugly to eat... I think I'll mummified it and set it up in a private museum for my grand kids to enjoy the ugliness of a carpellodic papaya fruit. lol
