I think it's perfectly fine to have a rug over carpet. It defines your living room area in the sea of carpet. The rug size looks okay in the picture since it, at least, covers the front legs of the sofa. It would be ideal if the rug was a little bigger. Also, people tend to trip over it when it is too small. Good job!

You are off to a good start. I love the rug, but do not like a rug over a carpet. I would take it back. While I cannot see the entire room, you can make the room look much better by pulling the couch away from the wall about 2 feet. The artwork looks great, but is incongruent with the couch. (couch a long rectangle and artwok is square. So, what you could do is either replace with a more rectangular piece or add something to both sides of the exisisting artwork to make the entire expanse rectangular.

I like the idea of an accent chair. There you could do add a great design as in the carpet.

Unfortunately I cannot take the artwork back. But I do like your idea of adding something on either side of it. Do you think sconces would work?

I like the rug...it adds interest. I would also add some pillows with some pattern to the sofa.

I think two more small pieces of art or photos in black square frames on each side of the painting would look nice. It would overall give the grouping a horizontal look without replacing the current art which is perfect. Center the new art on the large art, stacked one above the other.

Maybe you could introduce a bit of green, taken from the art, into a couple of pillows with a bit of print in them. And drape the throw a bit more casually instead of folded up.

Yes, I would add to smaller pieces of art to either side. Make sure they do not take away from the centerpiece, cut as handyman said, use the black frames to add cohesiveness. The problem with adding scones is that, if you decide to move the couch in the future, you have to move the sconces.

I like the rug/and agree the wall behind sofa needs more balance. Nice room!

You need bigger items on coffee table. Add big e nd table to end of sofa use a tall table lamp. More floor lamp to other side. In fact where mirror is, replace with pic over sofa.

Or if on budge add another picture matching one there put side by side, with les than 1/2" between no more 4" above top of sofa.

I might agree that the mirror is too small. If you add additional art to the other wall, maybe leave the mirror wall blank.

Accent chair should be in a print. With colors you like.

You could also move the artwork to one side and put the mirror from the other wall( which looks lonely and undersized over there) next to the painting with something else under it to form a grouping that gives the illusion of a rectangle on the wall. The carpet helps define the space but I agree with yoko O it could be a little larger. However once you add your accent chair it won't be noticeable.

I am not usually fond of carpet over carpet, but it looks good in your case ... So don't change it!

Great suggestions! What kind of framed art do you recommend I get? Black and white photos? And do you think a black leather accent chair would work? Maybe teal? I just don't want to get sick of it and be stuck with it.

I think black and whites would work well and although a green chair ,similar in color to the art, would be striking, if you are worried of tiring of it you should remain neutral. I generally pick my long term pieces in neutral colors and then bring color through less expensive accessories. It has worked for me thru multiple house changes and I never tire of them. I refresh the look with new pillows etc. so in other words go with the black chair.
