WWYD - Wall Shelfs or Large Wall Decor??

I'm nearing the end of my fireplace project! I am planning on placing a barnwood mantle under the tv to hold my Roku and I might put candle sticks on there too. My original thought was to get matching barn wood shelves to go above them but now I'm reconsidering. Someone said it would be too much barn wood and distract from the main mantel under the tv. Should I do another sort of wall shelf in its place? There's a good amount of empty space being boxed in so i want to ensure its scaled properly and am somewhat worried the shelves may seem too small. Should I just try to find two big decor items, something that would stick out some since I have the space? maybe two identical mirrors on either side?

Or what would you suggest? I'm going for a mix of farmhouse and industrial.

Looks good so far, very comfortable . I think the barnwood shelves would look awesome with the mantel, adding a farmhouse/industrial look. (Could also do shelving in black )If you choose not to add shelves on fireplace wall, you could add floating shelf or two on opposite wall, above sofa, to display art or photos. You have so many possibilities for your room! (Give thought to changing the ceiling fan)

Love the single Barnwood mantle idea. What about a large potted snake plant (mother-in-law's tongue) on each side? It would bring in green life and vertical height. They like to be neglected and don't need much light either.

what about wallpaper or stikwood? do you need shelves for storage or just design?

The cabinets were installed DIY as built ins. I came across an amazing deal on them, they're actually upper kitchen cabinets, but needed to paint them as they were a glossy light wood. The shelves aren't for storage simply design. i also intend to use this area for switching out my bulk of seasonal decor. My condo isn't huge but this is the main living space and the most used space in the house.

P)lease don't decorate you mantel with a Roku??? Use the bottom cabinets to hide the Roku even if you have to leave the door cracked when in use.

No to the mirrors. That will look wrong with the TV in the middle.

Don't replicate the barnwood on the shelves. It will just detract from the mantel.

Can you move the TV to one side above cabinets rather than where it is above fireplace? It is way too high especially given how close your sofa is to it. Will not be comfortable viewing or good for your neck.

If you must leave it there, and want to add shelving, I would add something that blends in with the white painted cabinets, so either white painted shelves or maybe glass. I love the look and feel of reclaimed wood but with all that white painted cabinetry and the white around and above the fireplace, I don't feel like it will flow that well.

And no to mirrors - if you don't do shelving, find some nice large pieces of art and/or larger decor pieces to put on the top of the cabinets.

Add a large piece of Art over sofa and make it the focal point to anchor a room. A large piece of Art can really bring in a wave of deftness and add more color and life to your room. It acts as a style to your room.

I think it's fine how it is as long as you add large accessory pieces (artwork, plant, like suggested above). You could also, not do the mantle and just add two barn wood shelves to warm up the space, as long as you incorporate that same wood feel in the rest of the room. Right now, the room doesn't feel like it can support the rustic feel of barn wood --feels more like transitional style (in my opinion).
