The size looks okay, but the placement seems somewhat awkward. Can you show other views that might show why it's placed where it is? If there is room, I'd try it on the other side of rug, with the chair back to the camera.

On its size, I think it's the dark color which gives it more mass and weight but if it were located in a spot on the gray rug and tucked into the seating group instead of sticking out it might blend in more.

Rotate the sectional. Turn one turn to the right, so that the back of one runs along the wall with the window and the back of the other runs parallel to the "runway" as one walks in the front door. Put the blue chair at a bit of an angle next to the fireplace.

I think it works just not in that location.

If i rotate the sectional, and one side runs the length of the runway/door, do you think it'll look too enclosed so to speak? The link I provided above shows more angles of the room. I was just curious if you guys like how the sectional looks now compared to the other way around

@lascatx: thank you for that advice! I will try to move it later today and take updated pictures. I do have a console table against the wall (to the right of the blue chair in photo), but perhaps another console table of some kind lining the back of the sectional would still look good?

Just one console table -- the placement of the sectional and room you have left for the "foyer" will determine the placement. I was thinking behind the sectional, but it may be that right where you have it works best.

I just looked at your other pictures and see you also have a fireplace to the right of the tv. If you rotate the sectional, the chair will be the only place that can't really see both the tv and fireplace, as opposed to much of your seating area that now cannot enjoy the fireplace.

If this were my room, I might be do some creative angling of the rug and sectional to bring the seating area, fireplace and tv together.

Olychick, are you saying that rotating the sectional the way lascat mentioned would be better (versus how it is now) because everyone can view the tv and fireplace except for the chair? Just wanted to make sure I was reading what you said correctly

Easier to move/turn a chair to watch TV than a sectional.

If you turn the sofa maybe the chair can go in the corner to the left of the window.

Jamie Lee, yes, same thing as Tibb and Lascatx are saying. Another thought I had, tho, when I mentioned angling the rug, was to bring the rug toward the TV and put one edge parallel to the fireplace, then arrange the sectional onto it. Maybe some day when you want something different, you could try that.

My wife and I moved the furniture around, and unfortunately, moving the sectional as suggested (one length of sectional running parallel to doorway) made it too close to the front entrance. In essence, the length of the sectional was too close upon opening the door because the couch width is too large.

Below are some updated photos. Do you guys think adding another chair would make it look better (i.e. adding a chair where the ottoman currently is next to the chair)? Would two chairs side-by-side be less awkward when opening the door?

We're likely going bring the coffee table to the basement as it's too large with additional furniture (in my opinion).

How about angling the chair so that it faces into the room at a diagonal? As it is now, it looks odd to me.

I'm glad to see you're going to do something with the coffee table since I also think it doesn't work with the furniture. Your last photo showing the chair location looks fine. If you don't need the ottoman I would remove it from the room and also suggest adding sofa pillows that have the same color as the chair. At the moment the chair stands out as the only dark element in the room.

I guess it all matters on what you are trying to accomplish. Are you trying to make it so that more people can watch television? Are you trying to make it so that people can converse? Are you trying to find a place for a chair? What is most important to you if you can only have one thing ... The way it looks or the functionality of it? Again, what are you trying to accomplish?

What is the distance to the far wall on the other side of the stairs? Could the tv go on that wall? Then the chair could go next to the fireplace for tv viewing and conversation. It's a very large tv that might work better over there (if it's not the dining area) and would not detract from the fireplace either.

Don't add a second chair that size. It would block the fireplace and double your difficulties of arranging the furniture.

I can relate with furniture partially in a walk way. Although it may not be ideal, in some circumstances you may not have any choice. I like the chair angled in the last picture.

@suzieque: I think I care for the way it looks more than anything. I'd want it to properly blend with the living area, regardless if its not an ideal place for tv watching. In the last picture do you think it fits well with the rest of the room?

I was just thinking that you're having so much trouble making one chair that you feel is too big for the space (not sure it is, but you're one to please) that getting a second one might not be the best choice. I like the idea of a pair of chairs, tho.

Is there a reason your sectional is pulled away from the wall with the hanging strings of decorations? It seems if you feel the chair is too far out in the entry space/walkway, that everything could be pushed toward the wall to accommodate the blue chair (or two if you get another). It might give you a little more space.

Yes better, now how about using that ottoman as your coffee table, put a tray on top. I wouldn't add another chair.

oops I missed your post about a smaller chair. I think I would do matching, if you decide you have the space.

Also, I keep wondering and looking at your sectional and wondering why, if you turn it, so the piece on the left (close to the solid wall) is where the piece in front of the window is, and the piece in front of the window then turns and runs perpendicular to the front door, it would be any further out in the walkway? Wouldn't it be exactly the same width on the window wall as now, with the second piece lined up on the edge of the rug? I'm sure I must be missing something, but it just looks like it should work. Then the chair or a pair could go against the solid wall.

Thanks Olychick. The sectional is pulled away because my wife and I would eventually like to put tall bookcases or floating shelves on the wall (especially since it's such a large wall). That and a nice picture/canvas where the tv mount is attached above the fireplace. Those two missing pieces would definitely help fill the room in my opinion.

@olychick: when we turned the sectional the way it was suggested, the tv was no longer center as it is. That is, the sectional was awkwardly facing the tv (i.e. the viewing angle was bad), and the only way to correct that would be to shift the tv to the right (and basically touch the wall). I was open to it but my wife wanted to keep the tv in the middle of the wall as it is.

Do you have any pictures from when you turned the sectional?

Sometimes, small tweaks of placement can make all the difference! I'm wondering like Olychick--. Seems like it would work

As far as space goes, the coffee table seems to be pulled out into the middle of the room rather than being close enough to seating to be usable. What do you plan to do for tables after you remove it?

That's a good question! I'm not quite sure yet but I think it is a bit too big for the area. Did you have any suggestions?

Maybe a round coffee table and a small round table next to chair.

Maybe a couple of small leather ottomans on wheels to be used to set a drink down on that can be moved easily to accommodate anyone who needs it.

Just thought I'd share an updated photo with y'all. We moved the blue accent chair downstairs for the meantime and finally added some shelves for our wall! Got a good deal at the Room and Board Outlet. Let me know what y'all think! (Still haven't replaced coffee table yet).

I like the new arrangement and think it was a good idea to move the chair out - at least for a while to see if you miss it. How much space is between the shelving and back of sectional? Have you tried turning the current coffee table the other way? maybe someone already said this, but if you are looking to replace the coffee table, what about two little ottomans? The ones that look like cubes? I have a leather cube ottoman that we use for a side table and extra seating that is easily moved around. You might even find some you like with storage inside.

Do you plan to have any floor or table lamps in the room, or just the overhead lighting? I think lamps would add a lot of warmth and interest to the room.

Those are great ideas! We hadn't thought about a floor lamp...but one in the corner would probably look really nice!
