That 4" kick should be easy to remove, then you can install your subway tile.

I don't see the problem with removing it. It can be done very easily , even if the drywall rips, you are going to tile over it anyway. Also, even if the walls are not straight, the tile should cover it and actually will work better since with the straight line of the 4" Quartz, it can't follow the flaws of the walls, while the tile can. Worst case, you can always start the tile backsplash above the 4"

Best option is to remove it, second option is to leave it and use paint. Don't tile above a backsplash like that.

Thank you. I think I'm going to have to fight him on this... He said he was advised to get the 4 inch kick. Your advice is very helpful.

Also there are two areas that it is up against cabinetry.. I'm concerned it will damage those areas it is removed.
