I'm in the same boat. I keep hearing they are overpriced, which I totally agree with because $12k for a refrigerator is just absurd. But on another note finding a built in that is reputable and gets good ratings is impossible.

I've had Sub Zero fridges in my last 2 homes. In my opinion, Sub Zero used to make a product that was far and above everything else on the market. However, in the last 10 years, the other manufacturers have made great strides in catching up. Today, I don't think that the quality difference truly justifies the added cost and that Sub Zero are just riding their reputation. They also have always had reports of poor customer service, although I haven't personally experienced any problems.

To back up my opinion, I'm just in the process of building a new house - and it won't have a Sub Zero fridge in it.

I researched and struggle for two weeks. In the end I went with a Kitchenaid. I know there are mixed reviews on this. I got a great deal, $7,200 instead of list $8,999. That was the final deciding point for me. We'll see how we go. Thank you for your thoughts anyway. Would have loved to have the SZ. It just didn't make sense.

We also considered a 48" SZ when we were building our home about 5 years ago, because we wanted a fully-integrated refrigerator in that size, but could not get over the price hurdle. We had a great experience with a Jenn-air fridge from our previous home, and they offered a fully-integrated 48" unit for about $7k (+tax). Went for the Jenn-air. So far so good...

It is always a good idea to shop around. Loved mine though.

Savanna the KitchenAid is the one I was originally looking into. I may even buy a used SZ that is still under warranty. Displays are also a way to save money but SZ does not include the 12 limited warranty when you purchase s display only the 2 & 5 are included. I'll have to see what kind of deal I can find.

In my experience sub zero is a very overpriced fridge and where i live the service sucks. I have a fridgedaire all fridge/ all freezer with builtin trim kit and friend got a sub zero for 3 x the price in 9 yrs i have never had a service call she has had 6 . 2 of those were after all the food in her freezer spoiled before the service guy came. I can think of many other things to get with that leftover money. A warranty is great if you can get service . The last time I put my style in a clients house I noticed electrolux now makes them and the inside is much nicer than mine

What I found is SZs are full price everywhere, all the time. We got the Kitchenaid at Lowes during a 10% sale and got an additional 10% when we opened a card with them. I think I will be very happy with it. Looking at SZs is like looking at Jaguars, and then trying to find an equivalent, you can't. But you can find a great, large refrigerator for a fair price.

I love how the Frigidaire looks but I'll have to check into a 36". I can get the KitchenAid for $7300 through a discount buyers group. But I'm torn with spending that on a new KitchenAid or a used/display SZ.

It is a hard decision. My thinking is I can almost totally replace the Kitchenaid for the original price of the SZ. I will never know if the SZ is worth it or not but I will come back to this forum with a report on the Kitchenaid.

I have a sub zero because of resale (plan to sell house in a few years and everyone wants that brand in the price bracket) and I don't think it's any better than any other fridge I've had.... I'd go with another counterdepth flush mount fridge and save a few grand!
