Wainscoting a base

I decided to put wainscoting in our mudroom hall and eventually wrapping it around the wall with the painting and stopping under the stairs. Initially I put the height going a little less than 2/3 the 8 foot ceiling but where the painting is the ceilings are 9 foot. I'm worried it will looking strange like that. I would love your advice.

If you search through the photos of wainscoting on Houzz there doesn't seem to be any set height - some are quite high, others low. If I were you Holly I would look through the multitude of photos and find a style you like and use that as a guide. Regarding your concern about the two different height ceilings - can you see both walls at the same time? If not than I can't see any problem with keeping the wainscoting the same height for both. I personally love all of that sort of finish and think it is great you are doing it. Good luck I'm sure you will end up with something you love.

The wainscoting will go to the wall with the painting and the height will be where the nest thermostat is. I'm trying to figure out if I should add more height or not.

Typical wainscoting is between 30-33" high. This looks way to high. Could you tell us how high off floor it is?

It's 60 inches. I was wanting it to be more like 2/3 the height of the ceiling vs the shorter kind.

@FloMagnan, sounds like about 64", and yes, it looks a bit high for an 8 foot ceiling. Still, I don't get the look the OP is going for.

My main concern is when I extend it to the other wall it will look strange since the ceiling is 9 ft in that area.

It's hard to say without more photos and a floor plan. You may want to scale back on where you use it (for instance don't wrap it around where the painting is) as this height will be limiting with art (your last inspiration photo shows art leaning on the ledge and you will not want to do that look throughout but rather in one or 2 key areas).

If you want it that high, stop at corner. If is intended to be in mud room, then stop there. If you just want it as decorative item, you can do it, but without a purpose I am inclined to keep it contained. Remember, the original intent for wainscoting was to protect walls from chairs marking walls.

Thanks flo! That was another debate weather or not to even do it. I wanted to put a picture rail on the wall with the painting

The painting you had in the one picture is great. With wainscoting high it won't fit there and it is too nice for even that spot. Do you have a more prominent place for it? So think about wall usage, pets? Children? Etc and that might help you decide on approach.
