Franke vs kraus

last modified: 10 years ago

Hello all again. I've looked and looked into kraus sinks and I can't find one that's under mount/ square and about 28-28.5 in to fit my 30 inch cabinet

I saw several posts about Franke but again I don't know anything about sinks. Everyone pretty much recommended kraus here. Wondering if it's just as good as kraus? I found several models that would most like be a good fit.

The Franke Kubus and Grande are 18 gauge, and the Kraus is thicker 16 gauge. Some people think 18 gauge is fine, while some people will only have 16 gauge - that's personal choice. People who prefer 16 gauge feel that the 18 gauge may dent more easily, and complain of a tinny sound when something is dropped in the sink. People who like their 18 gauge sinks do not feel these are problems. Everyone has their own take on this.

The Franke Cube that you linked does not state the gauge, at least not that I could find, maybe I missed it. It is unusual to omit the gauge of a SS sink in the specs, so that would concern me.

Kraus sinks usually come with sink grid included. Other sink brands sell the sink grids separately, and charge $80-150 additional for them. I would check whether Franke includes the grid in the price.

I would try to use one in person if you can. I have a Franke fireclay sink, which I love aesthetically, but it is already getting slightly stained because the pitch on the bottom is almost nonexistant. It is very difficult to get all the crud down the drain, versus my old sink where you just spray the stuff and down the drain it goes. I was unaware that the bottom might be TOO flat in a farmhouse sink (Because why would you make a sink where things didn't automatically run to the drain??) so I am passing that lesson along to you! lol (You are looking at SS so staining won't be a problem for you, but IDK if a very flat bottom is a universal trait of Franke sinks, so just check! )

TLDR: check any big, one bowl sink in person to make sure it is pitched enough for water and crumbs to drain easily.

I took this pic from the Kraus sink you linked in your other thread (that sink does come with grid and strainer included according to the link you provided). It shows the several SS gauges comparison. Nevertheless, many people have 18 gauge and like it, so it's up to you.

M Miller- i was really set on gettig the kraus sink. I love it and with the 16 gauge I was sold . My husband and I are doing all of this for the fist time and we'd really like to get most of these things right :). I was fine that the drainer and grid would have to be bought through them as opposed to the regular circle drain that I can get in the stores. But what concerns me is the corners as others have pointed out. They will be harder to clean. I'm not sure if that's true but people here are def more experienced than me

Honestly, I still really want the kraus sink

Franke is a very reputable company. We had a double-bowl Franke sink pre-remodel. But when it came time for our new sink, I knew I wanted single bowl and the price difference was quite a bit. Kraus was getting rave reviews here so that's what we went with. I think that the Kubus or the Cube are a pretty close match to the Kraus we have. If they have it in your size, I'd go for it.

I don't know what your budget is, but if you have a bigger budget for a sink, you can have one custom made. That is what I did, because I had a difficult corner location so that every sink on the market was either a bit too big, or too small. Not only is my custom sink the exact size needed, but it is 14-gauge (heaven), and the drain is in the corner exactly where I want it. Once you have a corner drain, you can't go back haha. You can specify the depth you want (don't go too deep, or it is too far of a reach to the bottom for your arms; mine is 9" and I wouldn't go deeper than that), and also you can tell them the radius of the corners. I.e. perhaps not exactly 90 degrees, because of the difficulty of cleaning such sharp corners, but 100 or something like that (they can advise you).

I will link the company that made my sink. Expect to pay $1600+ depending on your sink. It also is not the quickest; I think my turnaround was about 4-5 weeks. It was all done by phone and email. And now I have the perfect sized sink (for me) which is the most used item in my kitchen.

I had Franke in my previous home and I have Kraus now. I adored the Franke Orca. The Kraus is perfectly fine but isn't as fabulous as the Orca. Neither one made any sound. I do have some spots on the finish of the Kraus sink where the grid's feet are - they're shinier than the rest of the sink and I haven't found any way to fix it. The finish on the Orca was awesome. I would still purchase a Kraus again because I like what you get for the price you pay

I made the mistake of searching for the best sink and somehow the Franke Peak bubbled up. $1500 and 4 or 5 years later.... I still love the sink but have often questioned whether the square drain and shape were worth the high price. No dents, not in the direct sunlight, but I never question splashes or wonder whether it's clean.

Do a search for the Franke, they were very popular here a while ago. I chose a Franke Orca but haven't installed it yet.

Agree that the finish on the Franke sinks is really beautiful. That swayed my decision when I was sink shopping. That and the integrated shelf feature which I could not live without now that I have it.
