What a grand room. Do NOT mess with that floor. It is gorgeous. I would do some further research on the home and see what was original but as others have said too good an installation and true craftsmanship to remove. This home isn't about "what's in fashion now" but rather the times past. Even though it was done in 1990's someone spent some real bucks doing it. Paint the ugly mint green, walls and trim in creamy good color. I would be tempted to turn this into a ballroom, and have a charity ball to get funds to donate to a local restoration society! Pier mirrors, flowers, punch bowls, chamber music! What fun! Love it!

There is a totally marble mansion in Newport, RI. Called The Marble House. www.newportmansions.org. It is staggeringly beautiful. 500,000 cubic feet of marble. Design was inspired by thevPetit Trianon at Versailles. The New York Barron's built "summer homes" in Newport in the last 1880's to escape heat of the city. They called them "the cottages"! If you ever get the chance you should visit there. It is amazing. It would inspire you for your new home! Congratulations. Only a few of us get this kind of opportunity. Enjoy the ride!

Hi Flo! I spend every summer in RI and have been through the " cottages" many times! Newport is indeed a special place and the summer palaces a treat to see! Opulence beyond imagination for homes that were used for mere weeks during the summer in the gilded age!

Pick up the gray green color for the walls.

All I can think about is how much fun it would be to take a run and slide across that floor in my sock feet... it's fab and entries should be fab. Save (money) and calm and zen for the places that you will spend more time in.

Nice job Marion but maybe do it with tan or a cream in the tile. Or maybe with just some random color that you like. How about coral?

Hi! Lynartist. Aren't you the lucky one. When I was at MIT, I ventured up there several times. Loved it. So much to take in. My hubby and I returned several times too since we were restoring a vintage home in Oakmont, PA. Lots of ideas. Low budget. But we did emulate pretty well. That is what inspires me with this home. Yes, Rosecliff awesome. I forget the name of the Victorian House. It was the one we took most ideas from since the house we were restoring was Victorian. But, man those homes are not to be missed. Thanks for bringing them back to my mind again!

As I remember, it was gray wood exterior with multi paint colors on details including some purple. It was furthest out from the ocean as I remember.

I see so many comments here with different ideas, which is great! It's all food for thought and the only ones that can really determine what you want is you. My two cents is that the pink marble shows up in Italianate homes, and I think I'd keep it and the chandelier. I agree that the paint colors should flow into the adjacent room (light neutral, creamy). The one thing I see that I would change is the fireplace area. I'd spend the money to take off that tile and possibly the mantle, replacing it with something much more in style with the house. I wouldn't cover the floor with a rug.

if it is original..I would add light taupe and off white into the home and continue adding soft blush pink....

Just keep adding white taupe and blush tones..no green at all...let the dark green tile stand alone....fireplace is amazing! I would darken all the wood floors....maybe a walnut stain. Here are a few inspiration images of a blush pink and taupe rooms..

The fireplace looks original. The room is beautiful, I think the green paint is throwing things off. I would not put an area rug down. Is the fireplace in the adjoining room green? I would check with your local historical society to see if they have any photos of your home. I would not be surprised if a ball or two was held there. How do you wish to use this room? It is stunning now, do it right and it will be drop dead gorgeous.

Awesome room. All my previous suggestions remain. Creamy trim for paint. Maybe some gold leaf touches on relief above chandelier. Research before you do anything you might regret.

I imagine tall slender sculptures with light in hand of female statue on those little steps each side of fireplace. Wonder what was originally put on those spots?

Your ideabook shows you love more modern/contemporary design with a little traditional mixed in...so keep your decor clean and crisp nothing over the top when it comes to details...keep accessories large and selective....let the Chrystal shine!

Keep the green paint. It is period correct (it is close to the green in my 1929-1930 Tudor). It looks great. Neutral will look wrong and not go with the period look in my opinion. The pink marble is also period correct although the dark green marble I have not seen used in that period/style (I could be wrong and I am not an expert, but that dark green marble is more 80s/90s style to me).

To answer your question, Art Deco interior design was quite popular in houses of many styles during that period -- in fact, it is quite uncommon to see an Art Deco exterior, but quite common to see Art Deco interiors. My Tudor has Art Deco bathrooms throughout I would not trade them for new even if it was free. I have seen everything from Spanish to Georgian to Dutch colonials with Art Deco interiors.

Anyway, it looks good, is close to period correct, and appears to be very well done and in excellent condition. LEAVE IT ALONE!

If you must do anything, a rug over the medallion and green border would look good. I would go with a deco style oriental. I am sleeping above a Chinese one from that period with dark pink as the dominate color that would look great, but something Chinese in a lighter green would also look great. Go antique (if you can) as it helps make the other things in the room look like they were always there.

That's very pretty Tribble. Of course the soft pink marble is paired with white and gray which softens the whole effect. I think the rub here is the dark green. I am curious that so many seem to think this floor is somehow appropriate for the time period of this house when it screams 1990. I'm not saying they didn't do a fine job installing it but I sure don't see it as 1920's either.

If you think to mess with that floor I am personally coming over to duct tape myself to it.... :)

The walls...ummmm not enjoying so much. The chandelier seems to be the odd one here to me but if the walls get painted it will work beautifully.

HeeHee! I don't think you have to tape yourself kj! To bad they can't chisel the green out and put in a different border! A rug should take care of the rest!

Agreed lynartist! I do love marble and pink, it is the dark green that throws me off. The light green paint in this room is old and cracking in sections. At a minimum this room will need to be repainted, so I think we will address that and see how it looks! I'm hearing from most people that a creamy, light (white) color will work best. Loving all the great ideas !

Someone else may know if this is even possible but if you think you'd like it better without green what if you found someone that could dye the green marble black? Then bring in soft whites and gray... I did a quick Google search that suggested it might be possible by a professional of course. Just throwing it out there. I agree it would be a tragedy to replace those floors!

As one of the site's color 'gurus,' (someone else's name for me, honest) I'll come back to say more. Right now, because of the minty green paint . . the green marble is giving you pause. BUT there is green in the original tile and green really does act in every room as a neutral. The green color on the flanking cabinets behind the inglenooks is actually a wonderful neutral shade I would consider leaving during the first paint out. Once you paint, the dark green marble will also fall away to the eye. Add some large fiddle leaf figs to the corners of this room in big white painted terracotta clay pots (leave the inside natural) and wowsa, the natural plant green will do all the work of making the floor look great.

Dark green is coming back into fashion. I advise leaving the dark green.

LynArtist et al, my Cambria fabricator & installer has a water jet. Re medallions, he told me if I can draw it, he can make it. Water jets are expensive but awesome.

Hi Bruce! Installed two medallions into a marble floor some years back. They are very precision made and we were able to match the marble we were using on the floor into the design . Lovely!
