Loquat?

Oh!! Neighbor, just over the wall, took one out a few YEARS ago. Would be something if one little seed survived and is now sprouting. Possible?

I love loquats....the leaves, the fruit, the scent of the flowers.....

Well, I think I will pot it up and see what happens. I'd ptobably prefer a pretty shrub- tree to having critter attracting fruit. But, can a seed lie dormant for 2-3 years before sprouting?

That's interesting...psidium does look like that also. Martin_gw, do you have any psidium / Strawberry Guava growing around there?

Aha! I see that...in a search, I see the Strawberry Guava leaves, see what you mean. I'm in Crescent City and able to grow the feijoa here, now wondering if I can manage other guava...need to check. We're zone 17 and I think I need to see if I can do the loquats here also...only been here 2 1/2 years, coming up from SoCal is definitely different....

This is a Thai Guava but I also have a Pink, Mexican, Ruby Supreme and a few seedlings. Looking for an Arabian White. I grow my guavas in containers and bring them inside when we get cold temps. I'm in Central FL. The Strawberry guava stays outside under the roof protected from winds as well as a Pineapple guava (this one can take cold temps, I will plant it in the ground).

It really does look like your strawberry guava, halyna. I'm a bit disappointed as the loquat makes a nice small free. I'll have to google pics of S. Guava. If all of you believe it to be, will it bear fruit? Appreciate any advice.Many thanks!

But! It IS growing right over wall where neighbor removed his, and pretty sure it was a loquat. The fruit was pale- medium yellow. But this leaf DOES look like S. Guava. Confusing.

Halyna., it really looks like your second pic. Is that a strawberry guava? I believe I tread loquat leaves are serrated and this one is not. No idea if any nearby.

It's Thai guava on a 2ng pic. But all my tropical guavas look pretty much the same.

It does look more like a guava since the undersides and stems of loquat have a slight brown fuzz.....

Martin, do you live in a zone or area that is possible to get a volunteer from bird droppings ? Meaning....is it possible there are guavas such as this growing in your area for the birds to have fed from? My previous property was in zone 24 / sub-tropical SoCal and it would have been possible there.

No brown fuzz . Guess it is a Guava of some sort. I'm disappointed, as they don't make such a nice tree as loquat, it seems. Going to pot it up and see. Thank you all for pitching in to help me :)

Opposite leaves also rule out loquat.

Hard to i.d. the neighbors tree, but yours looks exactly like my noid guava. I do have the strawberry guava also and its leaves are totally different than other guavas. The neighbor might have a loquat, but who knows, maybe you might end up with a fantastic tasting guava!

Hard to believe, but cannot remember tasting a guava! They seem to be more of a bushy shrub than a tree. Will it bear fruit if it grew from a volunteer seed ? Do you have a pic of your bush? Thank you .! I

Noid means no i.d., that is, you don't have its full name. I know mine is a guava, but I have no clue which one, e.g., Mexican, Vietnamese, Ruby, etc. I don't even recall how I ended up with this guava, and it's been in a pot for way too long. Just a few days ago it finally developed a couple of fruit, but today when I took this pictures, the fruit had fallen off the plant so another year as a noid. I assume yours will eventually bear fruit. Here's my noid guava; the third picture is a branch from my strawberry guava and you can see how different the leaves are.

Almost two years later: I ignored/ neglected it, then eventually potted it up. If anyone is still here, any new thoughts...guava vs. Loquat? The pink peeking through is mandavilla.
