Bookshelf help!

Hi Guys,

I have some bookshelves in my bedroom that I want to look functional and stylish.

I've followed some general rules but not happy with the results..

And tips or ideas would be appreciated..

Best
Mick

Too much, too much, too much. Less is more! Eliminate at least 1/3 if not 1/2 of your things, I think you'll be happier with the result.

olldbobbi, Thank you for saying that. Now I don't have to.

The books upright and sideways are all on the left side. Move some to the right for balance. Presentation with access to your things should be foremost. Remove the gray crates and the other things that can be donated to charity if not being used. If storage is an issue, at least get some handsome bins for your misc. items. Look up bookcases on this site and you'll learn what works.
A lamp in the bookcase? I'd remove it, but if you don't, at least thread the wire down the back.
Post another "after" photo for us. Good Luck!

For things you want to keep but don't necessarily need to display, baskets of all types can be used for storage on the bottom shelf. This will also "ground" your bookcase. Here's an ideabook on all types of baskets: https://www.houzz.com/magazine/guest-picks-20-terrific-underbench-storage-solutions-stsetivw-vs~8165003

I read a designers rule of thumb for shelving decor. 1/3 books, 1/3 objects, 1/3 empty space. But it must be displayed properly...you can't just leave the upper third of the shelves empty! In you photo you have baskets with lids popping off from compacted clutter, stacked haphazardly. Your pictures are up too high to give an intimate view and they are clustered together. Sorry if this seems harsh...we have a tendency to overlook things we see every day....put the photos of your shelves up to some "designer" shelves from the Houzz archives...you'll see what I mean. So pull it all out and start with one group of things...the books. Place them randomly but neatly. Now add some pictures...not too many, maybe three. Then some decorative objects, vases or statuettes or ???.
No baskets of clutter! Just beautiful baskets! Your storage baskets can go in a storage area, a pantry or a closet. Hope this helps!

I notice that one set of bookshelves have a dark brown back, and the other set has a white back.

Both sets of shelves are removable. Take them off, line the back with fabric or even pretty rolled gift wrap (look at Hobby Lobby for ideas - they change the paper behind the display shelves for every new shipment of merchandise).

You can stretch fabric across the back and use a staple gun or even a regular stapler to attach the fabric. These shelves are in your bedroom, so you can use a complimentary color to your other decor if you wish, or you could use a neutral color. Then put the shelves back on. I like the way the shelves are the same height on both sets of bookcases.

I would put any photos of family or other small framed images primarily at eye level, and work books and other decor around the images.

I agree with On the Inside Design. I gave the above suggestions because it looked to me like one bookcase did not have a back and that the white I was seeing was the wall behind it.

    Hi guys.

Thanks for the tips, still need to change colour where backing is removed from one bookshelf.. Any ideas on colours?

Here is an updated pic, I'm still tinkering and I need proper baskets ( not sure what colour) but I think it's an improvement

    Cheers

Yep, I think you have made a good improvement! Don't be afraid to rotate pieces either, keeps things interesting. As for colours, what colours/style is present in the rest of the room?
