As a pool service technician I can not tell you how many times I encounter leaking pool pumps and pumps that have bearings that are rusted and screaming away. If you do not maintain your pump it is going to fail. Leaks cause the bearings to corrode and then the bearings start to make noise, and heat, and your pump will eventually fail. More than a good idea - servicing your pump is a safety concern. Take a look at this pump that actually caught fire from the friction. If your pump runs hot, smells hot or trips your electrical breaker then read this article about why this happens, and what you can do to stop it: Pool Pump Too Hot?
