How about a pair of paintings for either side of the fireplace?

It is always easy to replace throw pillows. You can add a vase or small sculpture to the mantle that is the same color as the new pillows.

I like previous ideas of art work by fireplace. Also, add some colorful pillows. I think adding some window treatment will define the room and add some color.

1-u can change the rug.. use another color with some pattern " i prefer light colors - dark and light blue"
2- u can also put a wallpaper with a strips pattern or just a color. it will be nice. choose it close to the rug color
3-add a simple curtain it will help and will be perfect
4- some accessorise like .. vase .. sculpture .. floor pillows..
5- the room need more light in the ceiling.

I don't know why people think they need color for the sake of color. To me what is wrong with that room is the placement of things and then adding or removing other things to get the balance right.

I would move those end tables and lamps to flank the larger couch against the wall (instead of the smaller loveseat against the window). I would remove that little table and plant in the corner. I would remove those two candlesticks on the mantel as they are too small. I would hang art work on the walls on either side of the TV. I would remove that ottoman. Then I would add two chairs facing the fireplace. And then I would get a bigger coffee table, that one is too small.

Maybe a new lighter coffee table and a ceramic side table with color not this color but something like it out it next to your chair

Your room is beautiful. Choose a favourite colour-anything will work in this lovely room-and accessorize away. You could even change pillows and vases by the season if you wanted to.

Do you have a den or family room where the TV would be more appropriate? The TV where it is kind of stabs the heart of any attempts of design or adding color in the room, imho. Between the TV off and the fireplace unlit, you just have this huge dark matter column of a void. What color can compete with that? That fireplace wall is a missed opportunity with the TV stationed there.

How much color can you stand? With all the major possibilities neutral the only places left for statements of color are pillows, throws, and rugs (and how about curtains?) as Poonam mentions. I'm not a fan of art used as decoration, coordinating with other room pieces. You buy art because it moves and says something to you in some way, not because it goes with the chair or pillows. There are other, more appropriate opportunities to coordinate colors in a room.

The good news, with everything neutral, you can go with any color you like for those items.

But that's just my opinion.

cpaul1, well, right. It is always about composition, color or not. But even more so if no color. How is wanting color for the sake of color any different than wanting neutral for the sake of neutral? Or maybe it isn't just for the sake of. Maybe the OP wants color to liven things up a bit, add some chromatic or emotional texture, not just compositional.

But I agree, the structure could use some rearranging. Good call.

And that's actually a great, pertinent question. What do you want to achieve by adding color? That can help us help you choose color, or as cpaul1 suggests, maybe no color is necessary.

I really like the color gold for an accent in this room. It is a lovely room. Gold pillows and some art and you are good, I think.

No, we don't have another room for the TV. This is our true living room and with 2 little girls we are in that room 90%. I feel like I need to brighten it and think color will add some cheer. And jfutral, I've been waiting forever for art in my price range to move me. It's just not happening. Most of my walls are bare because of this.

The room could have been more interesting by using a sofa and two chairs instead of the two facing sofas. You might consider painting the room and investing in more wall decor.

ok, because there are two little girls i would like to present some animal pillows. if there are some in particular, i can usually give you more or give you a set mixed with others.

oh if you like i have a modern set and a softer set of gray and yellow pillows. I also have a lovely set of gray pale blue and yellow pillows - quite stylish.

here is my art advise. We really can't do this for you. I have a house full of originals, got them all from auctions, charity thrift and a few from yard sales. only have a few that i paid over $10 for. there is local, if that does not work, there is etsy or saathiart. there are 100s of ideas on line. mom guided child art is good too. you can do photos, tell me and i will show you some ideas on how to make them look like a cohesive unit, do something you love scarfs, album covers, magazines, numerous things. if none of that works for you, go to etsy - i think saatchi might do this too. $1 buys you a download of an original piece of art. then you can go and have it printed in anyway you want, any size. I like the new printed on glass ones myself! This allows you to participate in the art process and although not original or signed it will still be a lot more unique then tree trunks, walking in the rain, or rainbow cow. Not that they are not nice, i loved them too. so happy i did not buy.

When I look at this lovely space, I wonder how comfy it is to be sideways to watch your favorite movies/shows, unless you are lying down on the couches. I also LOVE having windows open in a room and if you have little ones, they can see the snow falling or Grandma and Grandpa coming up the walk....without jumping on a couch. How about an L arrangement with those and then for the dash of color......put the chair I see a bit of in the pic near the window on the fireplace side.....great place for reading a bedtime story together. There is some pattern then to use for accent colors with pillows and throws in the room. Put a sofa table behind the couch facing the tv that has baskets under it for toys. Then the toys are close to be used, but easy to put away.

An L arrangement would close off that room too much. She really has the only arrangement that will work with the furniture. I have my couches arrange that way and we watch TV that way no problem. Our TV does pull out.

It's a lovely peaceful room. Try second hand stores for pictures. You can hang a few pictures together if you can't find a large one.
