beheading vs burying necks

Hi everyone -

I have tried both burying an AV's neck and beheading. I never seem to have good results when I bury a neck. It could be a lack of practice, but it seems I end up with a plant that is buried too deep or too shallow, or it just plain never does well afterward. Whereas, when I chop off the long neck along with all the roots, then carefully replant about 1 inch of neck in new potting soil in a new pot, then spray (instead of wick) the newly beheaded's soil until I see new growth, the plant always ends up looking brand new!

How do all of you handle a "necky" AV? Maybe I'm doing the burying part wrong?
