There is so much going on in this room it is hard to sort it all out - no place for the eye to rest. Everything competes for your attention. First: clear everything off of every surface - even tissue box - and all the small furniture as in small chairs as Mindy said then place the large pieces of furniture. I like the placement and color of the sofas. Replace the lamp shades with ones that are not so fussy and could help carry the ethnic vibe mentioned above. As for the plants maybe there are too many but looks like you have a lot of natural light so consider putting them in big bold colored glazed pots and making a grouping out of them so they read as one thing. I think what is troubling about the art above the TV is that it is too high and competes with the TV. Hard to tell if there is another location for the TV but with such unique art it would be nice to make that wall where the TV is now your focal point and group your art together on that wall keeping the center of the arrangement 5' from the floor. When the time comes for the rug try a natural fiber natural color woven rug. Really like the pillows from Brunna.co too!

Love the vertical picture on the wall where the clock was. That looks great! I think the diamond shaped quilt could be too large for the wall.

From what I can see, you already have blinds covering them. I do think sheer panels would look very nice and give the room a finished look.

We also had a two story family room, and I added height and interest to the room by creating decorative shadow boxes and framed patterned fabric. It was inexpensive and simple. When the upper walls are bare it makes the room look "smushed", so adding height makes the space seem larger.

I'm not a decorator/designer, I just like posting example pictures. Here a some samples. Note the elements in this picture with solid sofas. You can add you ethnic features really easily. Not too many.

If the circular designed blanket that you posted above has centimental value and you want to add it to the room, I would frame it to make it look more mature. Otherwise it reminds me of what you would see in a college dorm room. Also I think it is too large to replace the clock and would make that corner look cluttered. Don't move the clock over the doorway (you asked above). Again it's too big for the space.

I would scale back on the amount of furniture and rearrange the layout. Nobody has a good view of the TV with the current layout and anyone sitting in all the other random chairs would feel left out and awkward. Try to move one sofa back against the wall near the staircase (but leave space infront of the door) and the other between the kitchen and family room. Add a long sofa table behind the second sofa to place a couple of your plants on. This would open up the space infront of the windows. You can then try to add your table and chairs near the window if you want but eventually I would replace the dining chairs with armless side chairs. Eliminate the chair near the TV stand (out of place).

So go with the earthy pots (they are clay not plastic right?) and consider changing only the metallic one by the sofa to a bold colored glazed pot or even a black glazed pot. I could see one sofa turned so the back faces the dining area with a sofa table behind it. If you are on a budget (aren't we all??) use the table you now have on the stairwell wall as your sofa table. When you are playing around with all this rearranging, create a focal point somewhere (preferably not the TV). You obviously love plants and grow them well so collected together by the windows opposite one of the sofas could be your focal point. Can't wait to see pics of your progress. Would like to see your room with only the sofas and coffee table if that's possible...

You have too many random chairs next to plants, those need to be removed. I would take down the picture over the TV and the little ones along the windows.

The golden sofa should go back to where you had it and leave the smaller one where you placed it facing the TV. You will most likely need to turn the new rug. You may have room for a regular chair over by the stairs.

You need some bigger scaled lamps (pottery/ceramic) to match the size of the furniture. An opportunity to bring in more of your accent colors and overall room vibe..

Square side table with a lamp will go in corner of L shape made by sofas. Any curtain panels and the rod can run from the height of the dining area ceiling. I like the new rug you brought in.

I would drape the lower window, let the upper serve for sky lights. Uv the upper.

It does feel like you could slide your seating arrangement slightly to the right. It feels a little off centered. I think your sofa table should be lined up with your tv/console.

Your room is looking a lot better!! One thing about placing the sofa facing the stair is the view. Do you like to look out the windows when you are hanging out in the living room or do you prefer to look at the stairwell? By rotating the arrangement 90 degrees so the darker sofa has its back to the stairwell you create a circulation zone between the sofa and the stairs, one sofa faces the tv for viewing and one looks out the windows. Big expanses of windows like yours are a natural focal point. Agree with putting the end table in the corner between the sofas. Agree also that lamps need to be bigger scale glazed pottery. Good opportunity to bring in some color. Drapery only on lower windows with one rod going all the way across but a drapery panel only on either side of each window . I think you could leave the art between the windows but the one to the right of the window would be covered up by drapery so see how it looks next to the bigger one by the stair. I see orange for drapes in that room...

Much better with the L shape against window. Pull sofa closer to window so you have as much room as possible next to stairs - enough for a smaller scaled arm chair and table at an angle toward TV. Pull the area rug under sofas a bit more. Once you get a bigger lamp for the side table closest to back door, take away the buffet lamps. Make sure it's a 150W 3way for best lighting.

Choose a chair that has some fun pattern to compliment batik pillows or a leather would look great.

Is the burgundy fabric on the sofas in good shape? Would be interested in seeing the room without the slip covers..Check out ikat patterned curtain panels. If sofas in good shape, white and black ikat panels and pillows would look great.

What decor items do you love and want to keep in the room? Do you want color or monochromatic scheme? Lastly what feeling do you want the room to have...calm, playful, dramatic? I am sorry, but I do not care for the picture over the TV. I like the picture very much but just not over the TV. Is there any place else you could put it? I am a plant person also....love all your plants. Can your group a few of them together and leave some singly? I have my plants on plant stands of different heights. and you could do the same....use stands, wrought iron or wood, garden stools or even small tables. I see a lot of yours are on the floor, which is good also.

I love those lamps!! I should have mentioned this earlier, now that cctuttle has asked, let me answer them.
What do you want from this room...? This room is the one I stay most of the time when home. We too like most do watch TV, relax and entertain friend. This is going to be weird, I also study, do my work, and do research work in this room since I just need a laptop most of the time. I prefer to keep a small desk if possible.
What decor item you love to keep...? There is none in particular.
Do you want colors or monochromatic...? I like both depending on the season. In summer, I prefer monochromatic. Having said that, I can't afford to spend a lot to change the looks.
What feeling would you like the room to have calm, playful or dramatic? This is again on the season and I like to change the decor every now and then. Summer I would prefer calm and fall and winter it could be dramatic.

I took some pics after removing the slip covers. I have not moved the sofa near the stairway yet but prefer it.

Burgundy sofas look great and would allow for lighter background geographic drapery panels and toss pillows. Home Goods has tons of pillows right now that would compliment the decor.

The view was great when you had the sofa backed to the stairs but it looked too long for the area, art would be off and difficult to get out of bedroom to right of TV. A comfy small arm chair would look great with a small table(one in orig picture) in front and a floor lamp behind. Personally would take out sofa table and pull both pieces back as much as possible. Is there room on other side of long sofa for the other end table? Or get one of the ] shaped small tables that you can pull around and put your laptop on.

Looks like you could switch taller plants to other side of TV and perhaps the shorter corn plant on the other. Loved that last lamp-that is the first purchase I would make.

Prefer the burgundy sofas. You have a "tribal theme" in your art so perhaps playing that up in your throw pillows will bring some new life into the room. Also perhaps limit your pillows to three so the sofa is not swamped. Perhaps try the lamps on the side tables & switch the shades to black - a cheaper solution than new lamps. Yes, have plans for throw pillows, drapes, table lamps/ a cheaper fix. A round glass table is in my list too. Let me how this looks. Still looking for throw pillows... Waiting for feedback and thanks for all the help and time so far! Wondering if I make a L it might not be convenient for friends/ guests to access the couch.

The most updated picture is really the best layout for your space. Nice work! I know it's not easy when you live with something for a long time, it's hard to think outside of the box but you really transformed the room with just a few simple changes. I do think the coffee table needs to be changed out for something else. Maybe a square one a little lower to the ground. Or maybe it was the angle you took the picture but it looks rather tall.

I love what you are doing but the greenery is crowding everything; select the tallest "one" and add it if there is room at the very last thing.....the room is looking claustrophobic to me......but the room is looking amazing....and I do apologize if the plants are staying but I think too much.

Looked up Ethnic Living Rooms; nada on any green plants. Something to thinkg about?

You are making great progress. Couple of ideas to try:

1. End table placement between sofa and TV seems awkwardly crowded. Try putting it between the sofas where it can be useful to both sofas.

2. Plants : clustering the plants works in particular the tall plant next to the TV because it diminishes the presence of the TV and creates balance with the art drawing more attention to the art and creating a focal point with art and plants and TV being black becomes negative space in the arrangement . Very good! Try tweeking the arrangement just a bit by moving the plant to the right of the TV a little more to the right especially if the table moves over between the sofas. Having 3 plants together by the TV looks nice so I hope you have another low plant to you can put where the palm is then move the palm around the corner in front of the window by the doorway. That allows both large plants to have their full impact on your space but still visually be part of the arrangement.

3. Love your choice of coffee table, very versatile and round is really perfect for the L configuration of sofas. It goes great with the natural earthy feel of the room in general and compliments the monochromatic calm vibe for summer with neutral, maybe khaki, slip covers for the sofas which you can wash as needed then put away for your more dramatic winter vibe with burgundy colored sofas. Throw in some throw pillows with zipper covers so you can change them out with the seasons.

4. You mentioned a small desk...I have seen a room where a small desk was used as a sofa table. This would be perfect for how you use this space. Consider bringing in the glass top you talked about earlier. It wouldn't even have to be meant to be a desk...any number of things can become a base for a piece of glass and it becomes your desk. Something to think about especially if you like to browse architectural antique stores or flee markets.

This is a bit long but really appreciate the work you are putting in to make this room a space where you love to live and appreciate you letting us all join in the fun.

It looks like a 8x10 or 9x12 rug and do black & white. Lower the art over couch that the top of art = with the top of door trim.

A low or medium loom rug. It doesn't have to be wool. It can be poly. If u don't find a blk/wht. Could do black/beige. Something to go with your art/pillows.
