Would not paint that oak table or chairs. Great pieces of solid wood furniture do not need to be perfect to look just fine -- unless, perhaps, you're trying for an extremely formal look and the "man cave" sign suggests otherwise.

Liquid scratch cover might help if you're thinking they're looking a bit worn. Since your island base is quite dark, you could use the darker scratch cover repeatedly to get a similar look.

If the scratch cover doesn't do what needs to be done to renew the dining set, instead of painting it, you could sand and refinish the top of the table only and, perhaps, sand the chair seats only -- refinishing the round spindles and legs takes a lot of time and/or being a pro to get them to look right.

If you refinish the table top yourself, clean well after the first sanding -- remove all dust from the sanding and let the table top dry completely. The first sanding is to remove the original finish or to rough up the existing polyurethane finish so the next coat will adhere to the table top. Then apply very thin coats of clear polyurethane with a good quality paint brush, letting each coat fully dry before the next sanding -- and being sure to clean off all the dust from sanding between the two or three coats of polyurethane.

If liquid scratch cover or refinishing the top of the table does not create the improved look you want, you could get a tinted glass to cover cut to fit the top of the table rather than trying to refinish the top, then get cushions for the chair seats.

@Suezbell...no I won't refinish anything myself. They would be taken to a place in our town that does this as a business. They do marvelous work! The chairs aren't worn...they are just Golden Oak. Don't like to mix woods...yellowy orange oak and walnut colour stains. Thought that painting them might do the trick in using what we have.

@Flo...no, the pattern of the Pier One chairs were too golden and clashed with the carpet that has no golden colours in it. We chose from the swatches, but went to another Pier One store today and actually saw them on chairs. Yikes! We both didn't like the material. So...I was just thinking about repurposing what we have as this set is sturdy and...it is there, not being used. I guess this was a bad idea. :(

Mike can always make us a live edge table this spring, but it might have to be more of an oval or square so we will need to put another plank of wood in the middle. We are thinking walnut.

suezbell,,,that oak table is a generic piece from the 70-80's era. nothing remotely attractive about it. Painting it will make it look better and fit in with light and breezy coastal colors she has going on.

@Beth...that's a great idea. The golden oak table paint idea is a good one. But I hate to just throw the chairs away. :( Kijiji has tons of this furniture people are trying to get rid of. No one wants them.

The oak set. What if I paint the artow back chairs matte black? And the top a grey washed finish and the base black? The add seat pads in the cream colour... Would this look odd? (Having said this, it might look very odd).

OR...I can look for new plain wood chairs for the old table but some are too Shaker style and the mirror I have is somewhat elegant ... Painting the yellow oak set.... I see this is probably not a good idea. Like someone says it will just look like old out of date furniture painted up. More shabby than chic, lol. Arrrggghhh...I give up. I will likely keep the old table and just leave it...it needs some TLC though. It has three leaves...extends to sit 10. I am bound to come across some chairs at some point...

I personally like the wood surface and paint combination. Would paint table base and chairs either white or cream to match kitchen cabinets......then maybe stain tabletop surface darker.........chair pads could be added to add some color if you like.

Yes, paint your existing table and chairs. They're a classic design . Look up Annie Sloan.

EmBee,,,A nice Charcoal gray-black would look fine. ASCP has Graphite and CECE Caldwell has a nice black chalk paint. I would still leave the top a darker stain. Those chairs would look better in black. Give it a try. if you don't like it, you haven't

really lost anything. Or, just paint and wax one of them and see how you like it before you commit to doing all of them. For sure do the table. I think you will like it.

I would keep the dark round table and paint the base, keeping the beautiful wood grain top.

Paint the chairs the same colour as the base. I would choose a light grey the same as the sofa under your window in the lounge. You have 6 chair, keep four around the table and put the other two in the garage for extra guests, when you extend the table.

I think you have a beautiful home and you've mixed everything without it looking matchy-matchy, you're personal style comes through. So I like the idea of using different chair styles with the round table. Keeping the top dark will make it feel more formal and classic. In the end, if you still don't like the chairs, I'll buy them! :)

Thank you everyone for the comments but the few Houzzers (Beingsimone, Tribbletrouble) that say keep the existing table and paint the chairs...the existing round table? The very old dark one? That one is currently in my dining room now and has 4 chairs with it that are pleather (vinyl) dark brown Parson's chairs? You can't paint the vinyl chairs up. Tribble I am not sure what you mean.

Beingsimone...thank you for the kind comments but what chairs do you mean? The six I have are the golden oak arrowbacks that are currently in the man cave with the large double pedestal based table.

My sofa and love seat material under the window in the lounge in this picture below isn't grey...it is a light beige... The area carpet has grey in it as is the fireplace brick. Sorry for the other picture that makes it look grey. :(

I meant paint the golden oak set. Have a look at Annie Sloan as one option. I wouldn't sand the edges though, a bit too shabby chic for 2016.

Look at these chairs. They reminded me of your existing chairs. What if you had them redone, with a leather bright silver leather seat and the back with a fabric insert! If you like your current chairs, I think perhaps "fixing them" to better fit your look might be the answer. I would love the silver leather look with that paisley look. What do you think?

Embee, I meant paint the 6 golden oak chairs. And paint the base of the table you currently have in the dining room (Is that the table which folds out to 10?). Lose the pleather chairs. Lose the golden oak table.

I'm not crazy about the Pier One chairs. As I said, I love your style and I really think the golden oak chairs add a slight "country" look and mixes it up. The Pier One chairs are too predictable. My two cents :)

Too bad EmBee's location is such that she is very limited on resources to go to even on the Internet. But agree, that oak set is out of my nightmares! Let go or leave in the "Man Cave"! lol

I have good financial resources, but not much selection and mostly blah stuff in the very few small boutique stores and big box furniture stores in my area. Shipping costs from the USA is expensive then you have the duties and the LOW Canadian dollar. So... I thought maybe I would just try to use what I had already. Upcycling!

However, here is what I decided: I love the skirted chairs! They are so nice...comfy too! I will have a restoration place in our town redo the very old table for us in the same Shitake brown colour as the chair wood trim. It is a greyed brown...sort of rustic finish. It matches perfect with the existing furniture colours and my island. A few dusty grey blue and white hydrangeas in a vase...I am pretty happy for now... So for now, the golden oak set will sit -languish- in the Man Cave til the next round of hunters and hockey guys use it! Thank you for all your input everyone!

Hello everyone! Not sure if anyone will see this post but I finally recieved the Pier One dining chairs I ordered. The style is called "Eliane". They look really good with the colour and curves of the old table legs and are a perfect match to the stain of the island too. I love them! They sit firm...not saggy in the middle and are the perfect table height when sitting. They came in a pecan finish or "shitake" stain which is what I chose.

So...the yellow oak set had a lucky escape from Annie Sloan!

It is an area rug rather than a carpet, purchased at Bed Bath & Beyond. They offered the area rug in several sizes.
