Imperial Danby Marble with kids?

last modified: 10 years ago

I need some design help. We are remodeling our 1950s kitchen and going with a mostly white theme - the floors will be the same (or as close to the same) hardwood as the original floors in the rest of the house. I am absolutely in love with Imperial Danby - the bronze tones in the veining matches our cabinetry (which is a very soft, warm white) and our champagne bronze hardware beautifully. I was sold on going with a honed finish but now I am getting nervous about installing marble in a house with kids. I usually keep things pretty clean and I have done a few tests on the danby sample I have (which have all passed beautifully) but I would love to hear from people who have experience with danby in their kitchen. I have looked at so many countertops and none of them make my heart sing like imperial danby does. I am absolutely smitten with it! I really do not like Quartz as much as I've tried - it isn't warm and natural feeling enough to me. I also can't stand the busyness of granite.... But if marble is going to be a bad choice what other options do I have? Dolomite? Thoughts? Thanks in advance!!

It should be fine, but you'll only know for sure when you see it in person in your room, sorry to say. Love your choices--especially the backsplash tile!

The veining in mine reads medium to dark gray. Any green is so subtle it's not worth mentioning. I also have white cabinets, but with black/oil rubbed bronze hardware.

Here are a couple of photos, closeup of the gray backsplash tile:

Beautiful kitchen! The Danby looks great in here! Thank you for giving a visual, you are right, I don’t see green, more gray and warmth.

Thank you rhonda, but as I posted on another discussion, there is no tan or gold in it. It's cooler than Imperial. That's why I chose it, I didn't want the warmth of tan/gold.

I saw several slabs of imperial and Olympia in Portland last week and they all had some green in them, some more than others, curious if it is more prominent in the areas they are quarrying right now. We picked one with a little less but several had REALLY green veins even in good light.

That's very possible, my slabs are from 2013, so it was a different area of the quarry that they came from.

How is everyones Danby with scratching of things that are dragged across countertop? I have samples of Danby, I did all the stain and etching tests, I am fine with all of that but I’m having a hard time with how easily it scratches. Do you have a lot of scratching from items on countertops or people dragging things like glass storage containers over countertop?

  • PRO

Yes, it scratches easily. And chips. If that is going to bother you, then marble probably isn't for you.

I was very surprised how easily it scratched and pretty significantly from items that weren't that heavy. Thank you for the feedback Diana

Sarah, your kitchen is gorgeous . May I ask which warm white paint you used on your cabinets? I’d like a warm white cabinet with marble counters as well, and this combo is tricky as many marbles are cool. The Danby imperial seems to work well.

Our imperial slab is being fabricated this week (YAY!)

    Two questions--

    1. What sealers have you all used and are you happy with their performance?

    2. What edge profile do you have on your countertops and has anyone had issues with the edges chipping?

Hi, I don’t know how to tag people, but HU, here is an update on my countertops. It’s the best thing we did, I love them. The cabinets are 17 years old and still pristine. The previous owners were either very fastidious or they didn’t cook. I went with Bianco Gioia Carrara instead of Danbyfor cost savings. My fabricator sealed it with something, don’t know what, and then I sealed it a couple more times with Stonetech Bulletproof sealer. I also use the Stonetech daily cleaner. Both are working well. I mean there’s a ring under where the dish soap is, it could be removed with baking soda and water poultice but I don’t care because…that’s where the soap goes.

For edges, on perimeter I went with eased and island I did Ogee, all with almost square corners - like 1/32” radius. I did not want them to be curved at all, I don’t like the look. Here is how it turned out. The messy one is after we put the legs on. Good luck! You’re going to love it.

amynix1: I am considering exactly what you have done in my kitchen remodel--Danby on the island with soapstone near range and sink. I'm curious how you feel about those choices now that you've lived with it for 2 years. Thank you!

Another happy Imperial Danby customer over here! i just had my marble installed and it literally feels alive in my kitchen. The slab I sourced has alot of bronze and I am sincerely in love! I am not overly concerned about the scope of maintenance, even with young children, and look forward to living on them! Here is just the island, but what an elegance it brings. My market is a bit pricey and I paid about $180 a square foot—but 100% worth it.

Wow, that is so beautiful! I also love your flooring, and the dark hardware. It's a wonderful contrast against the white cabinets and marble. Enjoy your new kitchen!

Beautiful! We just had our Danby Imperial counters installed and they are so pretty. Much warmer than we had thought. We purchased a backsplash in 1" triangle mosaic in dynasty white honed and polished alternating finishes and now think it's too white and doesn't go with countertops. Any advice would be wonderful.

Can you take back and get a nice warmer white tile?

I wish we could but they were custom made. The tile store said they are going to try to match with a warmer grout. I'm curious to what backsplash people usually put with the warmer Imperial Danby. I've been trying to look for pictures online but most are with a whiter marble. Fingers crossed that the warmer grout works out or back to the drawing board.

How much backsplash tile do you have? Can you use it in a bathroom? It definitely is grayer/cooler than the Imperial Danby, and that would bother me. I'd go with a porcelain or ceramic tile in a warmer white for your kitchen, rather than marble, OR use the same Danby in slab form for the backsplash.

Beautiful! We just had our Danby imperial counters installed and they are gorgeous! Much warmer than I thought but love them. We purchased a backsplash with 1" triangle mosaic in dynasty white honed and polished mix, alternating the finishes and now i think backsplash is too white. Any input would be appreciated.

I chose a hand made white ceramic 2X8 subway for the majority of the area which is an exact match to the cabinet white. I am not so put off that the tile white is not a super warm white as in the counter as i see the backsplash as an extension of the cabinets. I chose a warm under cab lighting system that turns them ”warmer” anyway. Behind the range, where I have a glass chimney hood, I went with a super bold metallic bronze geometric ceramic tile that is a perfect addition to the bronze tones in the counter. I think in your case, maybe look at the sheets with the cabinets and asses how much gray is in your marble? Maybe it will give you a different perspective?

    1. I am not a "Pro" but do have to agree with the pro here that the different tones would bother me. I am having the same issue with my backsplash right now also. I wanted Danby very badly but ended up going with Mont Blanc Marble. I thought it would be a piece of cake to match the backsplash but I'm having a very hard time matching the colors. The tones are off to me and it's driving me bananas!!!!!! I would hate for you to not be in love with that beautiful kitchen because of the backsplash....especially since you have that GORGEOUS Danby in it!

MPerry, I love your backsplash idea but it might be a little more white than you want it. you might try the Arctic White Marble from The Tile Shop. They have a few mosaic styles and two subway rectangles in Arctic White. We used the Arctic White 3x6 rectangles with our Danby Marble in a bathroom.

MPerry: what did you end up choosing? I’m also doing imperial Danby and had found a large diamond shape for backsplash - in Dolomite(white like my cabinets). I’m thinking might be too white as well. Curious how your backsplash turned out. Thank you!

@phlydme you probably should start your own post (with photos) to get the best response.

I’m interested in what that poster ended up doing. Thanks.

The good and the bad. I’ve had Imperial Danby Marble about a year and love it. I would never do a fake stone and I think that’s the difference between loving it and regretting it. There is no comparison to the real thing. No staining. I never worry about staining. Etching. Yes. We have lots of parties, which includes a bar with limes, wine, margaritas etc. We are not super careful and we do have etching. The blaring cup circles fade over time and you truly can only see them in very specific lighting when the sun is setting or you hang your head low and sideways. Which I don’t do. Honing helps and I love the buttery soft feel and the velvety look. I would do it over again 1000 times
I’ll try and post pics for some reason it’s not letting me.

@phlydme sry for very late response! We ended up using the darker grout, exactly as the tile person suggested and its beautiful! It all matched up! Good luck!

    First the good!

And the bad. These are pics of etching… only seen if you tilt your head just so…. But they are there. They do fade over time. These are recent from a good party!

MPerry - gorgeous outcome! Thanks so much for posting!!
VanessaH - I’ll grin and bear it!! Thanks for your photos!

@MP248 Stunning choice of tile and kudos to the tile guy for the suggestion on the grout. We put in honed Imperial Danby about a month ago. Still trying to choose tile. Our cabinets are BM White Dove. What color are your cabinets? Could you post a photo of the long view in your kitchen?Thank in advance!

@vanessa h is it honed? Just use comet with a scotch pad and clean it/home it. It will come right off. And apply sealer again. I love my Danby because of it. I can get rid of any etching. Never had any staining and I love Akemi sealer. The best out of all the ones I tried. No regrets on picking danby, because of it.

Can anyone suggest some nice tile/backsplash options to compliment imperial danby countertops? I love this one from a Studio McGee project. Does anyone know what this is? Thank you!

    There's no photo Katie.

But there are SO many tiles that would work with Imperial Danby. Whites/grays/beige/green/blue/black. Rectangles, squares, arabesque, fishtail. Porcelain, ceramic, zelige, glazed brick, hand-painted, Delft.

Do a search and compile an Ideabook of backsplashes you like. Then take a sample of the marble to a good tile store and see what you like. Bring the samples home and view them in your kitchen. That's the way to choose one.

THanks so much Diana. I just realized the photo didn't post. Hopefully you can see it here. I'm leaning toward SW Creamy for the cabinets and want the backsplash to keep things feeling warm

Katie Brown did you ever find out what this back splash was ? To me it looks like Danby imperial marble cut 3x5 ? .

Hi Tamra - the McGee backsplash is Calacatta Gold marble cut to tile to match the slab counters (and backsplash behind range). I ended up going with Riad's Casablanca Gold marble tile to go with the Imperial counters and we're very happy with it. It was also about half the price of the Zellige options I was considering, which was great.
