Cutout in wall over the fireplace

I have this cut out above my fireplace. I guess the folks who built my house was going to put a tv there as it has a cable outlet and plug in there. I don't know what to do except find a huge picture to cover it. I don't want shelves b/c it's very deep and it will be a pain to clean. Any ideas??

Oh for crying out loud! Don't cover it...Eliminate it!!! Get a framer to frame it in and sheetrock it. Only downside is do you have extra paint? If not you might have to do the whole wall. Probably a few hundred tops. Oh, and by the way, load a bunch of stuff in there. A time capsule. A few pictures, beer bottles, todays newspaper, etc... I love demoing a house and finding old stuff in the nooks and crannies! Do kill the electric though.

Seems perfect for a sculpture occupying 2/3 of the space with an art light on it. The wiring is already there so lighting could be simple. Consider painting the wall in the opening a different color or using some other type of wall covering i.e. paneling, simple tiles, etc.

I think I would put a mirror over it with a black frame.

HI -- Put a big painting or mirror over it ,- but hinge it so the space behind can be hidden storage .

I love the idea of a sculpture or plant, too, perhaps with decorative leaves or climbing vines painted inside. Or you could consider a beautiful scene painted to look as if you're gazing out a window.
