Depends how much the couch costs. Reupholstery takes almost 20 yards of fabric for most couches, and labor can range from $ 400-900 depending on where you live.

Question is do you love it? The cost to reupholster is about the same as buying new. If you love it, then it's worth it because you get to give new life to something you love. Otherwise, you're better off just buying new. If you replace it, please help prevent yet more waste in our throwaway society and find a new home for it, eg through Habitat for Humanity etc. Some charities will even pick up stuff that you want to donate and remove it for you.

Ethan Allen sofa on Craigslist for $100. Its probably 30 years old but in storage for the last 10 years. It's well made. I cannot afford to buy a new quality sofa. I just cannot buy junky furniture - against my upbringing - buy well or do without.

I definitely get your concern about quality. Was it stored in a climate controlled environment and are you going to do the re-upholstering? You might be able to make it work if you really love it. :)

Pass. Too much work for something that is not a cherished piece.

If you need a sofa NOW I'd say get it, and put a cheerful big throw and some cushions on it. When you're ready to move on, donate it to a thrift shop or local charity. BTDT and did NOT regret being able to enjoy a quality, if aged and a bit tatty, couch while we pondered what to do next. Glad I didn't waste $$$ on a new sofa at that point in our lives!
