Help!!!! I need help picking out a kitchen backsplash STILL !!

last modified: 10 years ago

I have been struggling with picking out the perfect color for my kitchen back splash. AT least I have narrowed it down to green glass subway tiles. Let me tell you that alone was an accomplishment. The problem is I see something in the store it looks perfect. When I bring it home , it's either too light or too dark. I have dark cabinets and green typhoon granite. The granite is the problem . Super hard to find backslash to match it. The granite has a hint of green throughout it but you really can't see green until you get close to it. I wanted a little color in my kitchen so I though lets go with the green glass subway tile. I have a Dal tile green parade glass subway tile samples ( which I thought hooray I found the perfect color but when I got it home it looks to be slightly too dark) My kitchen is small. I don't have any flooring in yet because I want to get the backsplash in first. Help me! What do you think? I can't take this anymore. I thought this would be fun but it's a nightmare. Here are some pictures of my kitchen and the sample tiles. Not sure if the pictures give the accurate colors. I taped the tiles to the wall.

Cream is impossible to find. I keep bringing home samples and returning them. Often too yellow or too grey or stark white, or too beige. I look forward to seeing what you find annam2. We finally asked a designer for help. We meet with her Sat.

Home Depot has off white I am almost positive. You can't necessarily tell looking at it but if you put it next to true white, you can definitely tell.

You might have better luck going to a tile company instead of the retail outlets. The Home Depot products are made for that market and aren't always up to the quality of good tile makers. You get what you pay for of course. Try Emsers. They have cream.

BTW, Emser's also has celery and celadon colors.

ker9, Thank you for your help and advice. I have been doing the same thing. Bringing home samples from the store and returning. It is really amazing what you see in the store and think OMG! that's it , I finally found the one. Then you bring it home and it's awful. or it looks totally different. So you really need to have more than just the one small sample tile. It's too little and you can't get the true feel of it. So what I have been doing is getting several at least 5 samples of the same tile that I like and tape them to the wall. That gives you a true feel of what the tile will look like. I also found that tile samples really look different on the wall than they do just up against your granite or counter top sample. Putting them on the wall really really is a must. Wish I would have known that before. I am excited to get my sample of the celedon. I really hope it's the one. Good luck to you to. Hope you find exactly what you want. I will post a picture of the samples as soon as I get it.

Flo Mangan, thank you for your suggestions. I actually have been going tile companies, I did start out however and home depot and lowes but did not like anything they had. They do however have quite a bit on line. Which is impossible to pick a tile from the computer. So I did go to a tile company and that is where I found American Olean, celedon. Later I found that one of the outlets does carry it but only online. So I would have never picked it online. I saw a sample ( a very small sample) of it at the tile company. It should be in this week. I will post pictures. I am keeping me fingers crossed and my toes. Thanks again.

I've been to multiple tile companies, too, including more designer oriented ones. Haven't been to Home Depot or Lowes (perhaps they are next). Sonoma tile has some that are close but I don't really want the rustic handmade look. I'm looking forward to your celadon pictures although I think I want cream.

    Flo Mangan, Where is Emser's.?

    tilebar.com

has a pattern called Lancaster in several colors.

Since it already comes in white Bianco and light gray Dove, among others, their color Vanilla looks like a perfect shade of cream/off white!

All these Lancaster colors are available in 3x6, 3x12, bullnose edge for bordering, and and even a skinny pencil to border special tile features.

You can get one sample for $2.99, or 5 samples of anything for $5.00. Definitely a place worth looking at. Good luck to you :)

Emser has a website and you can find a location from that site. emser.com That is just one source. As spisland noted above tilebar.com is another. I use Emser here the most, because they have good pricing, they are local (but they are a national source) so if there is a problem they are very helpful in problem-solving. It really all comes down to the people you are dealing with on the ground near you. Very important. I have developed these "source" relationships over the years and won't recommend any unless I have personally used them or they have provided product to a client and it was a good experience.

I will be picking out backsplash soon so I appreciate you sharing your dilemma. I really love green and I think a lighter green would look very nice with your granite and your kitchen.

life4real, Thank you very much. I'm hoping the light green glass tile samples I have ordered will be the ONE I pick. It's been a long and frustrating process to pick out the backsplash. I still haven't received the samples, supposedly the are delayed for three more days. OMG! As soon as I get them I will post pictures. Praying I will love them so I can then order from the tile company.

Flo Mangan, I will look on that Emser site right now. I am pretty sure I looked at tile bar too to see if I could take advantage of the 5 samples for 5.00 but if I remember correctly they didn't have the tile I wanted or else they use different names for the same tiles. That was way too confusing. So I just ordered from Lowes who just happened to have this color I first saw at a tile store. I think I will really like it . When I can get the 5 samples and tape them to the wall. I think that is the only way to really get the true look of the tile. One small sample just doesn't do it, at least not for me. Keeping my fingers crossed. I will post pictures as soon as the samples come in.

Erica Brown, Your kitchen looks really pretty. All the colors go really nicely. Your granite is typhoon green too? It looks so much warmer than mine.

spisland, I just went on the Tile Bar site. You were right about the Lancaster tile. It looks beautiful and I saw a color I like a lot. It's called celery. I think it's very similar to the tile I samples I have ordered except mine are glass. Thank you for your advice . I will keep it in mind.

Okay, well I finally received the sample tiles I have been waiting for and as promised I am posting the pictures of them. I am going to try to post the old picture from above which I thought was too dark along with the new tile . The first three pictures are the lighter new green glass tile samples. The forth picture is just for fun. Look how far I've come. LOL! The last two pictures are the old tile , the one I originally posted here .

I confess I did not read all the posts however I will suggest that you keep the back splash simple in pattern and design. If you love your granite make it the star of the kitchen and have the back splash take second place. We paired a glass subway tile just like the first one you were considering with a busy granite counter for a recent client and it was beautiful. Because it's glass, the depth of color changes with the light due to it's reflective nature and I wouldn't have suggested anything busier than what we ended up with. I do think you should choose a lighter but slightly green undertone paired with those cupboards.

Rediscover Your Home, I really do not love my granite. I thought I did when I picked it out. If I had to do it over again I would choose a granite with a warmer color. But I'm stuck with this one now. It's typhoon green and there are very light green veins running throughout. Hard to see in the pictures. So I like the glass tile and the picture I just posted is actually a light green glass which I am thinking of just getting. I am just so sick of shopping for backsplash. Anyway, I figure anything would look great now compared to what I started with. LOL!

ker9, Yes I do like the lighter green tile much better. I am probably going to go with that one. I cannot shop around any longer. I'm done!!! LOL!! Thanks for all your help and comments. I really appreciate it. When it's all done. I will post pictures of the finished product.

One thing I learned from all this is You definitely need more than just the one sample tile the store gives you to make a decision. Here's something else I learned that I found really is helpful tape the tile on to the wall because it looks so much different on the wall than it does on the counter or next to the counter. The color really changes on the wall. So my suggestion is get or buy several pieces of the tile you think you like and tape them to the wall. It makes a world of difference. Maybe this only applies to glass tiles. Wish someone would have told me this a while ago.

kjoy1, Thank you so much. I really appreciate you saying that. I think it will look beautiful too when it's done. After all, look how bad it was to start with! LOL!!!

I really love it! You have done so much to your kitchen and it looks great! Where did you get the light green glass tiles? Can you tell me the brand? My stone is getting installed next week and they may work for me. I really appreciate your tips too! I will keep them in mind when I go looking for samples!

Hello everyone and a big thank you to all of you for your help and suggestions and advice. My kitchen is almost done except I need your advice again on what flooring to get. Here are some pictures of my kitchen. Again that's so much to all of you for all your help. There's the before picture. Yikes! Sorry I posted a picture twice can' figure out how to delete one.

Great job! If there is a green glass pencil tile that goes with your
subways it would finish off the top of the tile between the windows very
    nicely.

What floors do you have in adjoining room? It usually looks good to continue with that same flooring.

Anna, you might want to start another post since the backsplash title no longer applies.

Beautiful job on your kitchen! So pretty!! If you are tiling your floors, I'd go with a large tile that has the same colors of your granite, minus that slight green you mentioned your granite has. And not too patterned, so it won't compete with your granite.

18 x 18 or 20 x 20 tile, particularly set on the diagonal, always looks great. It was the best advice I ever received. I regret our fatter grout, which was advice we didn't receive before our install. Never again; chairs almost get stuck.

Thank you leelee and thanks so much for your suggestion spisland. I will definitely keep that in mind. I was actually thinking of going with a color similar to my granite too. Thanks so much.

Please don't use that green...far too dark...go with a cream one and stay light..it looks like a small area which will close in with a dark tile

njcressman, thank you for your advice. I have the backsplash in . I used a lighter green glass. I 'll try and upload a picture. I'm working on the floor now. After searching and searching for anything except a hard ceramic or porcelain, I couldn't find anything I liked. So now I'm looking at porcelain and I'm hoping to find one soon and finally complete this long dragged out remodel.

So glad you found something that works, looks great! I can totally see a nice deep gray that has a greenish undertone for your floor - I think trying to tie in to the granite or backsplash would be too hard, will clash, and not look right. Large tiles (18x18) set on a diagonal, or large rectangular tiles (12x24) in a brick patter would be smashing!

Careful not to go too dark with the tile floors; it'll need to look really good below your cabinet color. If you buy one pattern as a trial, I recommend getting about 6 of them to test. Laid under your bottom cabinets, and outward too, perusing from the opposite side of the room should let you know!

I'd also recommend avoiding lightest grout for flooring. Yet another thing I learned the very hard way. Never, never again.

mmessbl, mrc345, spisland thank you for your advice and suggestions I really appreciate it. This has been super stressful to me . I don' t want to go too dark with the floor because my kitchen is small and I don't get much light in it. So I was thinking of going a little lighter. I am having a tough time finding a tile I like when I bring a grey tile sample home , it seems clash with the granite. Then I go for a warmer tone with cream or biege and that clashes with the granite. Oh I hate my granite. Well I think I need to go with a porcelain tile that hasa combination of grey, cream and white in it. Here are some samples I brought home . Sorry, I'm not too good with uploading puctures . Sorry for the doubles, can't figure out how to delete.

I was going to suggest a nice cream travertine before I even saw your tiles on the floor! I like those . Looks good. If it's porcelain, even better. go for it. lay it in a running bond with the larger rectangles.

I also love the green splash and the nice trim work around your window.

Those 2 tiles that aren't placed near enough to your cabinets look like they could be good--they seem less beige and more gray.

Could you take a photo of them placed under cabinetry, and looking down from your granite.

Even if neither of those is "the one," it should reveal the tone direction. I suspect light gray with your very pretty granite!

spisland, thank you. I will take a picture with those two tile samples under the cabinets. I did that with the other three tile sample above in one of my photos.I think that is a good idea. These are the lighter tiles with more grey and white. The one on the end left side is the one with more tan color. Yikes this is so frustrating.

I think the warmer cream toned tiles are best with your kitchen. I wouldn't try to match it exactly to your countertops. Let the counters be the only part of the room with the gray tones, since the other choices all have some warmth in them. Love your green back splash.

calidesign, thank you . That is a great idea and one I never thought about. I'll give that some thought. Great advice. Thanks, again.

I think your instinct to blend beige and gray would be best. It's hard to tell in photos for sure, but to me, the rectangular one (by the little squares) seems to accomplish that -- and with an amazing design! It's not veiny, it's just very cool!

    annam2 thanked spisland

spisland, thank you. I am going to look at a porcelain with a blend of grey, beige and maybe white/cream. Yes, it's really hard to get the true color or idea of the tiles from the pictures. Thanks for your help
