Splendide

We have 2 of these Thalictrum. One in full sun the other in part sun.

Part Sun:

Better than was the case last season for our "full sun" specimen but still not nearly as vigorous as we had in 2014. (I'd love to know what I/weather did right at that time but for sure all the garden stars were aligned that season. If I am allowed to guess I am thinking that it is getting a bit squashed having two very healthy tall and wide helianthus book ending this thalictrum. I am, planning to move at least one of them far away).

Full Sun:

(What I notice in the shot below is there are some flowers at a much lower level than is usually the case).

I wonder why this plant isnt more readily available. It takes up less room (horizontal near the ground) than one might think and it is very hardy and yet I know of only one nursery in my province (and it is on-line) that offers it for sale. In Europe the last year or so I see there is a new variation available i.e. Splendide White.

Very impressive, Rouge. Those are beauties. I think I see A. 'Honorine Joubert' in the first picture? Mine has also just started blooming. I thought they are usually much later, around October, but I guess I was wrong? Or is yours earlier than usual too?

I wonder how they would do down south?

I would bet they would need lots more shade!

Yup. You are right. Another favorite late summer Fall perennial of mine.

If I could get a show like that, Rouge, I would be over the moon!

I understand. I was spoiled as the flower "ball" was double that in 2014. It was crazy good!

Definitely a spectacular must have plant worthy of every cent one pays for it !! Large fern like foliage topped with a huge haze of blooms for months on end, outstanding!

Twros, if you get a chance, before the snow comes ;), could you post a picture or two of your Splendide?

ooooh Splendide in white - want want. I did get another couple of white delavayii types and a rarity which is making me nervous - the large flowered thalictrum diffusiiflorum. Absolutely one of my top plant families...and yours is truly worthy of it's name, Rouge.

Me too Campanula. You and I have more and more in common ;).

Campanula, whenever I google Splendide "White" one invariably gets uk nurseries..so easie peasie for you.

And I actually 'spoke' with a nursery in our Nova Scotia that shows it in its on-line catalogue!

a rarity which is making me nervous - the large flowered thalictrum diffusiiflorum

I had never heard of this one till you mentioned it! Those are big flowers. Have you seen a full size specimen in person?

And why nervous Campanula? I know you can handle it ;)

I grew Meadow Rue once years ago, loved it. However mine never reached the height of yours - spectacular! There is an Amish nursery near me that has this plant available. At present I don't have the right spot for it but now I'm almost tempted to buy it anyway.

Rouge, I'll first need to get the snow shovel and dig 'Splendide' out from under 2 ft of snow, lol. Joking aside, we just received a heavy rain event with high winds and the plant is looking a bit worse for the wear.

There are only 2 nurseries which offer thalictrum diffusiflorum...and mine came with a caveat that it can be difficult to establish in a garden but does OK in a large pot with gritty compost. Mine is already ensconced in a tiny north facing border!

,Campanula, please let me know how it progresses.

I see references to another larger flowering thalictrum (called Hinkley...after the plant man of the same last name?)

Love! Over the weekend, I planted a straight species Thalictrum rochebruneanum. Its worth growing just for the foliage IMO and those flowers are icing on the cake.

With a screen name greenhearted I can see you wear your love of foliage on your sleeve ;). But for me I need those flowers!

    LOL Rouge! Guilty as charged.
