Removing a pond...what to do with fish?

We have a 4,000 gallon above-ground swimming pool that somehow : ) has been infested with goldfish and water plants.

It's getting older (5+ years), so we worry about leaks or a catastrophic rupture. Since it's right next to our garage, that would be a real problem.

So we're going to remove it. Getting rid of the plants is no problem, but what do we do with probably 100 goldfish up to 12" long? I offered them free at my pond club, but only one person has actually shown up.

We do have a couple of smaller ponds, but they already have enough fish. We don't want to build another large pond.

I had no idea what I was in for when we bought the 3 tiny fish at the pet store.

I'm making progress. I put a notice in my pond club's newsletter; 2 people have picked up fish, and one is coming back at least once; I think he'd take all the fish if he could, to redistribute to other friends. Yay.

Do you have a free publication there that you could advertise free fish or craigslist or perhaps contact an aquatic store that sells fish.

That's a good idea. We also have freecycle, but I'm not sure about their policies for pets.

On craigslist, sometime I see offers for free dogs, cats, chickens, fish so I assume free cycle would also. Good luck.

every freecycle has different rules. I got in trouble on ours for asking for plant cuttings that someone on the list considered invasive.

My neighborhood has a Facebook 'Buy, Sell, Trade' page. Anything like that in your area?

Regarding your getting in trouble with freecycle, there always those "stewards of the environment" that monitor for trade or sell of invasive species and do their best to shame or scare you from making what they consider unwise choices. Was the plant on Hawaii's Invasive Plant List? If not, take that scolding with a grain of salt and chalk it up to someone projecting their own fears and thoughts on others.
