Gee I wish I had this problem! None of my friends or myself have cleaning services. We cannot afford them.

Have a twice a month service through a small company. I pay $80 for the visit, no matter how long it takes or how many people are sent. I have had the same woman come for about 15 years now, usually by herself. She is reliable, honest, and has worked around several large remodeling projects and my husband's wheelchair and medical equipment. I am very grateful for her service. I pay the $80 to the company owner and tip $20 cash to the woman each time, $100 at Christmas, and give her first choice of any items I will be donating. She send clothing and shoes to her family in the Ukraine.

No i do not tip my cleaning people. I have had several cleaning services clean my house over the years. They start off great, on time, good job. then within a couple months they start slacking off, and they don't clean properly. I have basically given upon finding a good consistent reliable cleaning crew. I pay $75 per visit, every other week, for 2 bedrooms, one bath, and I clean up before they get here. I do not plan to tip anyone. i think the fee they charge is enough.

I have an individual who comes to my house every other week. I do not tip them extra. I do give them things - clothing, dining chairs, an old box TV that still works. they get the right of first refusal. I always have iced, cold water for them. do they do the best job ever? no, even I don't do that anymore; however, I trust them. and that's the most important thing (plus they do a very good job). I do tip them at holiday time.

I use to tip them very well, it was called an allowance! They were also fed, lived at home for free, clothed very well, oh, and my husband and I also bought them their first car (basically a clunker, since all three wrecked their car within 2 weeks of having their drivers license) Unless your sick, elderly, or disabled, clean your own house..

debbowers, that sounds like a great idea but I live with a husband that is a slob and a teenager that is exactly like his father. They just do not see the mess that I see. It is not that they are lazy. So, to keep my sanity and not become a screaming, shrewish witch, I hired a cleaning service. Best thing I ever did. I am much happier. My husband and son are much happier. Please do not judge.

I tip at Christmas time. Since I only have my housecleaner here twice a month for half a day, I feel that a $50 tip is enough.

My financial effort goes into making sure my house keeper gets a living wage, which she only keeps, and giving raises when I can afford them. I would like to be able to tip, especially at Christmas, but my income is static, and sometimes it is too difficult.

I do. however, buy her things which we have talked about, like a special book, or certain kind of cool water bottle.

Just curious because I sincerely do not know, but what does living in Vegas have to do with tipping a cleaning service? I know most Vegas workers live on tips but does that extend to all trades? BTW I love Vegas...heading there in a few days...

I professionally cleaned houses for 20 years most only ever tipped at Christmas time. I later had an alterations business for 10 years and had a few clients that tipped regularly. I knew they truly appreciated my hard work. That made me want to go the 'extra mile' for them as well.

Heck no. I supply cleaning products and rags which I then wash. This couple actually does a lousy job half the time. So I consider that paying them the agreed upon fee is like a 50% tip. Sigh. I need to find someone new.

i always do if they do a good job. if you can't every time then at least give them a good holiday tip. it not only makes them treat your house really well, you will always get an emergency last minute cleaning if needed!

why for showing up, one of the few jobs that did not alter their hourly wage in the downturn, plus majority need lessons in cleaning,lamps are not glued to the tables they sit on...this occupation is like a person with a brush and roller and it is assumed they must be a painter

My house keeper has been working for our family for several years. I generally give her a little extra at each cleaning and the equivalent of two days of work at the end of the year. I always ask myself what I'd be happy with if I were providing a service and try to give that amount- whether at a salon, the mail carrier, house cleaner, etc.

I tip 20% and appreciate my cleaning girls so much!! We have a service so it is always the same girls! For the holidays, I tip a full cleaning fee and they are worth every penny.

I don't tip. I double the fee during the holidays.

If they are self employed and I pay cash,no but do double the fee for Christmas. If they work for a service company and do a good job, yes because they are generally not well paid.

I pay a fair wage for regular work. I do give her more if there is a special job or 'ick' factor as when my son moved out and she cleaned his room.

At Christmas she gets a personal gift, a plate of goodies and $100 bill.

To dentalofficedesign . I don't think there is anyone that performs a service that doesn't get tipped in Las Vegas. It's not just the "usual" food and beverage servers, bell captains, taxi drivers, valet parking attendants and so on. I've tipped my pool service, delivery service (private monthly package delivery), newspaper delivery, gardeners, A/C installers, household movers, floor installers, roof repairmen, painters and, yes, my maid service. I've worked for tips for 40 years and if someone does a good, honest and dependable job, I'm going to give them a tip. I hope you enjoyed your stay in Vegas, and if you won a little, I hope you tipped your dealer.

Thanks Charlene! Yes I always tip, especially the dealer ;0). Used to be a cocktail server in AC so I know the business... also a waitress in my younger years and H used to be a bartender. We never win in Vegas but love it anyway. Tip regardless win or lose. We also tip all the above but honestly never thought to tip the AC guy or floor installers..probably because they own their companies. Will keep that in mind in the future. Do you tip your doctors and dentists also?

An interesting question. No, I can't say I have tipped medical, dental or attorney professionals. The A/C and floor installers were the "hired help" and not the owners, but I have tipped the owners when they were the ones who did the work - a handyman, an appliance installer and a door repairman. Glad you enjoy Vegas, and thanks for your generosity. I'll be retiring next year after dealing for 35 years. (The other 5 years of tip income I was a hairdresser.)

Wow!! Good for you on your retirement. You won't believe this but I was a hairdresser as well! Had to give that up when my back went south but I loved it and loved working with the people. Both jobs. I tip the hired guys too just never thought of the owner. Will have to rethink that! Yup, we visit Vegas at least twice per year even though AC and surrounding states have casinos within an hour away, they could never compare to Vegas IMO. Just love that place. My husband plays Pai Gow tiles and finding a table is becoming more difficult. BUT, would still visit Vegas, nothing like it.

I pay my cleaners for their time and work. Maybe if they surprised me by doing something out of the ordinary like removing the spots out of the carpet or organizing the pan drawer for example, I would feel great about giving them a tip.

I think cleaners should be tipped only in cases of extra effort. It is always appropriate to incourage people who go extra mile

If you hire a cleaning company, you know that they already included all their expenses and fees in the price you pay. Also, one or more cleaners may come to your home to do the job (whatever you prefer) so if you decide to give a tip, this may be a not so small expense. If you have a favorite cleaner who comes to your home regularly to clean, tipping may have more sense. In my view, it all comes down to what makes you feel good and how will the cleaning professional feel about it. Mutual respect is the most important, whether you decide to show it through a tip or differently.

We have a weekly cleaning lady. She gets a extra week pay in the summer, and a bonus of $100 at Christmas.

I typically leave a tip, as well as , a gift at Christmas and birthdays. I do not tip when she comes to do the weekly cleaning. However, I do pay her, even if I need to cancel her services, due to my scheduling conflicts. . She’s been with me for 25 years and I feel that is the least I can do.

I tip her at the holidays and if something is beyond the call of duty she gets something extra for that. (She's helped me change the house water filtration filter, for one.) When her husband was briefly laid up with a broken leg, I gave her extra, since he was only paid for part of that time recuperating.

Even if the work is done badly, I still leave a tip, because in this case the person will wake up a conscience and the next time everything will be fine. Of course, I always tip the cleaning lady. Everyone knows that this is not an easy job. My husband and I have four children, and you can imagine what a mess they make every day in the house. I order house cleaning service, although I used to clean everything myself, but I can no longer cope with it. I know very well how hard it is to clean this house, especially after four children, and we have a big house. The cleaner who cleans our house is a professional, after cleaning all our personal belongings are always in place. She never complained about the dirty house. No, I don't tip her, but I pay her exceptionally well and provide a Christmas bonus. She has been cleaning my house for 20+ years, and has become family to me. I think she's happy with her pay rate because she doesn't complain at all.

When they drive a nicer car than I do and the job is generally sloppy, which is my current situation, then heck no No one tips me for what i do. Tipping is a curse that should have never gotten started.

I have two different cleaning ladies, each is responsible for different tasks. They are generously paid, both get two weeks paid vacation. One I give if and when they need it, or else in the summer time, the other week at christmas time. I have had both for more than 10 years, and so appreciate their efforts, and I know they appreciate me, because they consistantly go above and beyond. BTW, they dont work together, nor know each other, and neither work for a company.

I don't anticipate ever being able to afford a cleaning service. If I could afford to have one, I would probably tip and occasionally give gifts of thanks.

@cathy hickson, I only tip the cleaners also. It is a small company, but I think this is the way to go. I don't think there are hard and fast rules to guide us, so follow your gut. But I must say, how awkward . . .

I’ve only had someone clean my house a few times and never got any satisfactory results, just swipe and wipe. I paid in cash as requested and what I thought was a well above average wage and about what i was getting paid before taxes! No tipping and it’s their business, so they should charge more if they feel it isn’t enough. I hate all these tipping requirements and the ambiguity of it all.
