There are patterns out there that are made exactly for that type of quilt. I think one I saw was, "I don't want to cut into my favorite fabric," quilt or something like that. It was large blocks of the focus fabric with smaller blocks creating like a sashing around them.

Personally I recently saw an example of the gypsy wife quilt and fell in love with it. Although designed around orphan blocks it would work equally well for favorite prints I think.

HB, did you make the Hole in the Barn Door block for June lotto? That pattern would work using your feature fabrics for the center, and then complimentary colors/fabrics for the smaller edges to bring some continuity to the top. Just an idea!

beth7happy I was actually thinking of making a quilt using the Hole in the Barn door pattern and use the same colors we did for June. They came out so nice! :) It would be good for this too. Thank you :)

I've got a great quilt pattern in a book for this type of quilt. A friend recently borrowed my book and made a lovely quilt for a friend. I'll try to take a photo of the page in the book and add some directions. It's a very easy quilt: rectangles of many different prints, cut small at the top, increasing in size as they go down to the bottom of the quilt, sashed with approx. 2" sashing strips between the rectangles and 2" border strips (borders are same fabric as the sashing). The book contains quilt patterns to make in a weekend!

Great question. I always appreciate everyone's answers. Never heard of a gypsy wife quilt but love it. Some people are so creative! I also like the disappearing nine patch to have a bigger piece of fabric. You can make it whatever size you want.

Look at these! :) The first one is definitely me and the kind of colors and prints I like. I'm leaning more towards the pattern in the second picture but with the colors from the first. In the first picture the only thing that bothers me is that some of the prints stop at the very edge. But other than that I like it.

I'm getting inspired! :) If I can just learn how to cut and sew to where my measurements come out right I'll be in business lol :D

All are beautiful and yes, inspiring! Just keep cutting and sewing!! Experience is the key to getting all things better!! One reason I've done the lotto blocks for so long is that you get the experience of many patterns that use different methods of piecing. And, this group, as you already know, is great for sharing ideas and technique! You're off to a great start!!

Hareball, if you are not already familiar with Kaffe Fassett, you'll want to check out his fabrics.

I have a mat and rotary cutter. I recently bought a quarter mat. One of those slotted ruler cutting thingies. I felt the quarter mat helped. And even lining up the squares on the rectangles things looked okay. But then when I started sewing the first two geese together things looked choppy and not completely even. So I don't know what happened. :( So any tips are welcome :D

Pls tell what a quarter matt is? I've quilted for yrs. w/ rotary cutter & matt, but haven't seen the term before, googling didn't get me an answer.

If your cutting matts are name brand (like Olfa) you can also use the grid lines on the matt to cut with. If (when) they're accurate, they help a lot.

PS: for Newcomers, a good rule to follow (from carpenters) is measure TWICE, cut once.

Also, don't cut when you're tired, it becomes much easier to make mistakes w/out realizing it.

I'm in the process of making that quickie quilt for my Vet who is expecting a son. I didn't want to cut up my "In the Ocean" fabrics too much. You may be looking for the alternate block. You cut an 8 1/2 inch block of the focus fabric, then as an alternate block cut a 4 1/2 inch block and border the 41/4 inch block with 21/2 in squares. I struggle with understanding this forum so if this link doesn't work, my apologies.

lmontestella I thought it was called a quarter mat or maybe that's what I thought it said on it. I'm not home to see the exact name but it's a slotted quilt ruler.

I probably just need to slow down. Also like you said try not to work when I'm tired. I think part of it too is that I'm a perfectionist so I think I just shut that voice in my head up to keep from taking a week to cut one square lol

Here are the block dimensions:

Row A blocks = 6.5 " X 9.5 "

Row B blocks = 7.5" X 9.5"

Row C blocks = 8.5" X 9.5"

Row D blocks = 9.5" X 9.5"

Row E blocks = 10.5" X 9.5"

The sashing strips are 2.5" wide and the borders are 3.5" wide.

The super fast and easy beginner alternate block pattern.

A comment on the above quilt. Since I used wood batting which I love especially for baby quilts, I only stitched around the blocks in the ditch. Then ditch stitched the small alternate block center square. I didn't want too much quilting so the quilt would be softer so I just used my serpentine stitch through the larger blocks and on the border. The wool batting advised up to 8 inches for quilting so hopefully what I have done will be ok.

Here are the easiest quilts that I've done. The first one is very similar to the second photo you have at the top. I first saw this quilt on the Fresh Lemons website. The second one is Chinese Coins, the last I don't have a name for, I just thought it up but I call it Summer Quilt. The first two went to my two sisters, the last one I still have.

The dimensions in my post above are for the Country Quilt design from the book Quick Quilts to Make in a Weekend, the photo in the book of the indigo blue and white quilt and the photo of the taupe/gray and graphic prints quilt made by my friend.
