any wood the size of a pencil or thicker will usually work. Usually 8 to 10 inches is best, but ive seen even 4 inch cuttings take.

i would not go larger than your thumb in width though.

How do you know its "black" mulberry ?

There are several varieties of Red and White (and hybrids) that are wild, many produce good fruit.

The reason i ask, is that Red and Whites will grow from cuttings very easily.

My understanding is blacks are harder, but i have limited experience with them myself.

My large red (wild volunteer) will root very easily.

"where to cut" - doesnt matter much i find. normally i try to use wood that is more brown than green though. 8 to 10inches, etc...

put in loose soil. potting mix is good, garden soil works fine for me with some perlite.

Thank you very much! And they're black because when they're ripe their final colour is black / very deep purple.

Okay, so here's what I did.

1) cut some wood at the nodes at one point and cut the leaves from the other point.

2) put the node point woods into the seeding mixture in a well drained pot.

3) watered well

4) covered the whole pot with transparent plastic bag and poked a few holes in it.

5) placed it under the tree away from direct sunlight.

some white mulberry varieties fruits are black when ripe.

same with reds.

its VERY hard to determine what type you have without a history on the tree, or a DNA test, as the leaves look very similar on all 3.

UNRIPE fruit will have a white-ish tinge on the whites (some, but not all white varieties)

Unripe fruit is usually green on reds and blacks.

If you still have access to the tree, I'd start as many cuttings as you can with both woody branches and green branches. I'd also use rooting hormone on some. I've read that there are rooting hormones for soft cuttings and woody cuttings. Good luck. Keep us updated. Van

Hi Green, the unripe fruit is green, then slowly changes to light red/pink before maturing into black fruit.

Van, could you please elaborate? Do you mean taking the cuttings with green branches attached to the top (along with leaves) and taking the cutting of woody branches without green wood and leaves?

As you can see, I made some holes. The cuttings are 6-10 inches in length, woody, cut at the nodes, with the leaves and green wood cut off.

Yes the green wood towards the top. None of the rootings should have leaves in my opinion. I really do not know which wood will take. I usually wrap my cuttings with parafilm tape so I don't have to have a tent. Van
