Finding a kitchen designer that will work with Ikea kitchens

Hi Everybody,

My significant other and I recently bought a house and we would like to remodel the kitchen. We both really like the Ikea style kitchens, but we don't feel confident enough to do the planning ourselves. Basically, we are looking for somebody to provide layout advice, but is willing to work with Ikea cabinetry and countertops, or at least isn't limited to a particular store's material. Ikea provides planning services for $199, which is super cheap, but I'm not sure how good the advice will be. If you have some thoughts about this, I'd really appreciate hearing your advice. Thanks in advance for your help.

You'd have to consult an INDEPENDENT kitchen designer in your area,( not someone in a cabinet store) pay a fee for the design as you'd not be purchasing cabinets through him or her. Expect to pay a lot more that 199.00, and remember you tend to get what you pay for. Search Houzz for pro's in your area.

I have designed Ikea kitchens for 20+ yrs but I am an independent kitchen designer and there are many of us around. Ikea does a basic design and if you do not need anything fancy or your space is pretty straight forward go with them, but otherwise choose a designer who has worked with the new Ikea cabinets they are awesome but a new look at cabinets.

Have you considered better quality than Ikea? I think in the long run you may save by investing in a pro with a great cabinet maker.... otherwise, a box store offers some reasonable options... your kitchen is not a place to pull back on funding.

This is really helpful advice. Thank you so much for your suggestions. Much appreciated!

We used the IKEA person and were very pleased. We did the design first, she then came to the house and walked is through it and redid some parts to be more efficient. She measured all and signed off on it as accurate. We bought all from ikea and had delivered. The same company then came and built and is talked the kitchen, for another fee. It was a seamless perfect experience.

We also used IKEA services for design and installation (including a need for customization of a cabinet for a weird corner) in an NYC apt. We had a good experience, IKEA kitchen did not interfere with making significant profit on our apt when we eventually sold. Purchased quartz counters through ikea as well, and dishwasher with panel, other appliances we purchased independently.

Hi Alison, That's great you had a good experience with the Ikea designer. Thank you for recommending them! Do you think they can help with the entire layout of the kitchen to make more counter top space?

Hi Allegra, Did you also use the Ikea kitchen planning service, or did you do all the planning yourself? Thanks for your recommendation!

We used the planning service. We had a good experience overall, and would recommend it.

The one we worked with had varying levels of service. We felt confident in being able to do a basic layout ourselves but they would have, for more money, come and planned the whole thing for us.

We design & install 200+ IKEA kitchens a year and absolutely love the quality and design of their kitchen products... Our design team knows the product line inside out and we can tell you that it's WORTH THE EXTRA MONEY TO HIRE A 3RD PARTY DESIGNER... One of the favorite things we love about our designers is that they ALL have experience installing IKEA cabinets... Which makes it much more efficient when designing... Expect to pay $300-$500 for a set of plans/drawings and shopping list from an independent company...

and might I add, $300- $500 for that set of plans etc is money well spent. BTDT and love our IKEA kitchen.

IKEA is the way to go. We design and remodel kitchens for a living. We have installed over 260 to be exact. We will install any cabinet brIkea is the way to go. We remodel kitchens for a living. We have installed over 260 to be exact. We will install any cabinet a client decides on. In my professional experience.

The quality is extremely good. They can easily support marble, quarts and granite.

and our client decides on. In my professional experience Ikea is the best choice.

The quality is extremely good. They can easily support marble, quarts and granite.

They come with a 25 year warranty (personally I would not want the same kitchen for 25 years and received the JD Power rating as having the best overall customer satisfaction!

Ikea is the largest retailer of home goods in the world. They consume wood than anyone else. In other wood, they will be in business if you every need parts.

Many cabinet retailers will tell you the IKEA cabinets are no good because they are flat packed. This is false information. The cabinet retailer is simply attempting to sell you their line of cabinets. They do not have access to the IKEA cabinets.

To prove my point. Have you ever seen cabinets growing and hanging from trees. Well my friend, all Kitchen cabinets are assembled at sometime and somewhere.

Ikea saves on warehousing and especially freight and labor for assembly.

The cabinets are not that difficult to assemble. The cabinets utilize dowels, cam locks, Blum hinges and Blum glides. The drawers are full extension , utilize the full width of your cabinets. They offer many sizes Door dampers and a wide selection colors, finishes and numerous designs.

Do NOT get the IKEA cabinets confused with cheaply built office furniture.

    The cabinets are priced fairly
You will have to drive to the nearest store to to place your order and pickup your cabinets. If you new st his, plan on spending a day. If all the cabinets are not available you will most likely need to make a second trip.

If you assembly them correctly you will have a beautiful, extremely well built and functional Kitchen for many years to come.

I would rate IKEA an easy 98 out of of 100.

The above statements and comments are my own. They are based solely on mine first hand knowledge and experience with IKEA. I am not compensated in any anyway.

I have include some pictures of our resent work.

We currently install in Chattanooga, Knoxville, Johnson City, Kingsport Bristol and most placed between. We would consider traveling to most anywhere in the U.S. to complete an assembly.

    Sincerely,
    J.D. Jenkins

I know this was posted a while ago, but I have been a designer for the last 13 years designing high end commercial and residential spaces all over the world and in the media and started a company based solely on designing Ikea kitchens in Chicago online and in person. People are looking for value as well as aesthetic and longevity. I have designed the $100k kitchens but after working with Ikea and having an Ikea kitchen myself my view changed. Now with the success of my company in Chicago we have just gone nationwide designing online with people because the need was so great.

I have designed and installed 40+ just this year in Chicago alone. As a top producing real estate agent here in Chicago I am designing these kitchens in properties that are $300k - $2million + for designers, developers and home owners alike. Ikea can be so interchangeable and hacked in anyway with a good contractor. Many high end kitchen cabinets are now offering their fronts that fit the Ikea frames now so they don't miss out on what is now a huge trend backed with customers buying and installing them.

I can customize Ikea kitchens with other fronts, pulls, lighting, counters etc. to create a very unique and customized look. So when you walk in you would never even know it is Ikea. I really can't say enough good things about the product and my clients vouch for them too. I have attached one of my favorites we completed recently. Flat Pack Kitchen Design

I have a very old website that I put together in 1999 (so no comments on the poor design) that explains what to look for in a kitchen designer. You can find it here I hope it is helpful.

I see all these IKEA installation specialists in this thread so I might as well weigh in myself. I am a Toronto-area general contractor and I have used IKEA kitchens in dozens of projects, in homes with market values up to $3m. As others have said, the quality is great and the opportunities for customization are almost limitless. As to OP's question, I do my own kitchen design for my clients, but I think the IKEA design service works well for most people.

All these are IKEA - some with stock doors, some with custom doors, some with custom-lacquered stock doors.
