That's a tricky question. Some work on an hourly basis and others on a cost-plus if you're buying merchandise from them. Having only hired for specific consultation, I've paid $75 - $100/hour. A designer can actually save you a lot of money and keep you from making expensive mistakes.

Before you hire someone, put together a file with everything you like. Colors, fabrics, rugs, furniture, styles, etc. Pictures of rooms that appeal to you. What furnishings and art you have and want to use. That way your designer doesn't waste precious (& costly) time pulling things you won't like. I've used designers several times to help me pull together a specific room or just to give me affirmation that I'm going in the right direction. They billed me on an hourly basis and it usually took no longer than one or two hours to come up with a plan.

You also need to hire someone whose design aesthetic agrees with yours. One of the design groups we work with (in our drapery workroom) has a very contemporary vibe and they tend to stick with that. Another works with historic as well as new homes. One of my favorites is actually a decorator and her homes have a fabulous eclectic look.

Completely agree with torreykm. Hiring an interior designer can save a lot of money by avoiding costly mistakes. Designer fees vary as has been said, the important thing is that they are very clear with you on how they charge and when. We provide clients with a written agreement that defines scope of work, fees, product discounts and timeline overview- our clients are very appreciative to know exactly what to expect and having an agreement ensures there are no surprises down the road. Along with liking their aesthetics, it is really important to get along with your designer. If you have any reservations in hiring them, don't! Trust your instinct and interview designers until you find a good fit!

Thank you all so much. Spoke to few interior designers and "they are pretty pricey* ( in my LarryDavid's voice) So I'm going to take advantage of this app and do my d and d myself. Below are pictures of the rooms the way it is right now. The owner still has his stuff in there. I welcome any ideas with colors, furniture and curtains and any the cool accessories. The place is really small with a lot of windows; so i need something to make it look big and spacious without overcrowding. Thanks for your help.
