ground wire

hello, i managed to hit a live wire while nailing in baseboards. i decided to live without the outlets to one side of the splice, i capped those wires off in a junction box, and put a new outlet in a junction box on the other side of the break. since the repair my lights have been dimming very slightly. i'm wondering if i should have left the neutral connected, for it to complete the circuit? and if perhaps it grounded to the stake and not the breaker box and now the circuit is interrupted? should i rewire the neutral and not the black and white? any advice please? i'm a layman but i do have contractor help.
