Hi! That's great that you opted for a steam shower.

A nice compliment would be a towel warmer, perhaps on the narrow wall next to your shower if you have an outlet in that area since a hardwire model would have had to be planned before closing the walls.

Above the bench I would hang a large vertical piece of art pulling a few colors from your floor tiles. Something you love that will bring life to the space.

Yes, I would consider it. I only upgraded the shower to a steam shower (big job), however the mirror and light fixtures have been there for almost 12 years. So, both replacement and decor advise is welcome. Thank you so much!

a few general ideas:

Beautiful steam shower and bathroom! I would definitely want a heated towel warmer not far from the shower. Of course beautiful towels in a color that you like or matching that pretty green rug in front of the shower. I also suggest hanging a vertical piece of art above the bench.

You might want to frame mirror in that beautiful wood. I would suggest some copper art for walls that enhance color palette. Perhaps some rust colored lush towels to bring a bit more contrast to your look. I would be careful of artwork due to humidity concerns. Let me find some things to recommend for your walls and possibly counter top.

I would keep mirror frame same as your wood. Too many woods in smaller space can be distracting. You want serenity here!

I think the 48" bench is too long for your space. Looks like you could bash your leg on it coming in to room. The smaller bench you have right now is good.

Yes, the space is pretty much exactly 4ft, so this is good to know. Glad I didn't order it. The one I have now there was intended for inside the shower, but I found it was too big and that's why I have it there. I am now looking for a smaller one (teak or some kind of plastic portable bench for the inside the shower). Thank you so much for your feedback and advise!! :-)

Flo - Thank you for the mirror feedback as well -- I think that's exactly what I will do, frame the mirror in some of the leftover wood from my ceiling. This Houzz advise column and Houzz in itself it just fantastic! In fact this Houzz site is where I got the idea to put wood on the ceiling. I showed a couple pictures from Houzz with wood ceiling in the bathroom to my Contractor and He said it would go nice, so he purchased wood and installed it for me! FUN FUN!!

i agree about the same wood for the mirror. I love that ceiling! Did you seal with a spar varnish??? Not poly I hope.

My Contractor asked me if I want it varnished, and since it is Cedar I wanted to keep it as it is (no varnish). He said I could use linseed oil on it if I choose, but at this point I have not done anything -- I do like it w/o varnish, but I guess it's always an option down the road. Thanks for all the feedback -- I had been looking at those frames you can put on builder grade mirrors and had not even thought of using the same wood as my ceiling. Thanks a million, I'm sure that's exactly what I will have done!!! :)

Just for info, cedar will take stain different than other woods so you won't get a perfect match, but just work to get it close. And yes seal it.

I could just kick myself for not asking for ideas earlier in the project. I towel built-in towel warmer on the small wall left of the shower would have been lush! Here the walls were open there, an Electrician was already pulling wires. BUMMER :-(

So, just to be clear -- should the cedar ceiling and mirror frame be varnished or stained? Also, sounds like just a light stain to match my cabinets would be best - correct? I supposed that would give more of a finished look?

Yes, a stain that blends with vanity and a "finish" coat appropriate for wet area.

you could use a mixture of oil/mineral spirits/top coat. That's what a varnish is. It allows the wood to breathe, expand and contract. A poly is too stiff and would crack. A varnish will also lend a bit of darkening to the wood. This is a brand that I've used that has a marine oil, in a cedar color. It would be perfect for you ceiling. If you have a Ganahl lumber near you, you can pick up free sample tubes and try it out. Its called Penofin. and the Marine OilWood finish would be up your alley. Also has mildew protection.
