Are you painting them or gutting the kitchen?

You have such nice natural light coming in. Consider the dark grey, like charcoal. Look at Houzz photos with Charcoal or even Black kitchen cabinets. So pretty.

We are planning to paint them. My husband doesn't like the two tone cabinets but he was sceptical of the grey! I thought about dark just not black! Thanks. How can I see what it will look it?

I took this picture from a blog of the colors of paint I want to use. I was thinking the middle, you think I should go as far as the right?

Are you cabinets actual oak or are they mdf cabinets with a type of 'oak' laminate material? Is it actually wood or very thin veneer plastic coated material over mdf?? I'm asking because if you are going to go through all of the pain of painting them (and you will have to prime these differently) then you may want wait and get better cabinets. You could actually get unpainted, raw, oak cabinets and paint them. Probably 1500 for your size kitchen. Or check craigslist. People are often tearing out the solid oak cabinets and practically giving them away. It would be half the work than what you have to do with what you currently have. (painting-wise!. You would still have take out the old ones and install the new ones. But you could paint them in a garage or in the yard before installing them).

I am wanting to use milk paint to prevent priming and sanding. Which is what the picture from the blog is from. That's what she did. The picture was only one coat but there is also a top coat and an anti glosser.

I like the medium - my kitchen is very similar to yours and that is what I would go with.

I don't think you would be happy with either the dark or the light...you have a small kitchen.

How durable is that paint you plan on using?

What about something other than gray?

(ps does your fridge need to be pushed back?)

It's not really that small of a kitchen. I like the grey so I'm not considering any other colors. The paint is very durable. And no my fridge doesn't need to be pushed back. This picture is angled from the next room over.

I'm thinking the medium will look darker when it's done anyway!

Is that Gen Finishes 'Driftwood Gray' you are considering? It's a nice shade. will look fine when all done. what sort of hardware were you thinking? A nickel or a bronze? or even satin gold would look good.

Yes the driftwood! I wasn't sure about hardware. We don't have any now so didn't know if I wanted to add any. I will be spray painting hinges though probably a nickle.

Love Driftwood. You don't want to buy new hinges??would be much easier and you wouldn't have to worry about the paint chipping down the road. You have to take them off to paint them anyway, you might as well get new ones. if you buy a contractors pack, it's not that expensive. You could also do the hinges in a ORB too. Either way, nickel or orb, they go together. If you don't like the bar handles, how about the bin pulls? Use those for the drawers and knobs on the doors.

I just saw the knob in the pic above. I like those. if you go w/those, stay w/the darker hinges. Have you thought about doing the driftwood on the bottom and the lighter one on top? (is the light color GullWing? or just an off white?) You could always do your bottom ones first, and then take one upper cabinet and do it in the lighter gray. Stand back and see how it looks. Oh, and can you lose the scallop thing over the sink?? lol.

haha. yeah. I'm sure we could get rid of the scallop. The light grey I think is seagull or something. My husband doesn't like the two toned cabinets so we'd probably just stick to all dark grey. Maybe black hardware?! I like the pulls. Who knows! Too many choices ;-)

mzapper ,,the milk paint she is referring to is actually an acrylic paint. General Finishes Milk Paint. I use it frequently on my furniture redo's. A true milk paint is made from powered milk protein, casein, and tinted w/colorant. Water is mixed to it prior to painting. It works best on raw wood and has been used for hundreds of years. It is natural and has very little odor.

The GF milk paint (acrylic,,why they named it milk paint, I don't know!) is nice to paint with and also doesn't have much odor. Chalk paint is actually the one that needs no prep work and goes on very matte. You lightly sand it to give it a smooth finish and then apply any number of topcoats (poly, oil, wax, etc.). the best glossy paint I have found to work with is BM Advance. I don't believe the odor is too bad. Any of these will work for kitchen cabinets, it's just a matter of the type of look you are going for.

What you don't want to use on your cabinets is a latex paint meant for drywall. You should use an acrylic hybrid that is specifically designed for wood trim.

I do a medium grey color with white trim looks great. Then paint the wall color an actual color like a sage green or a gey/blue hue.

Raised Ranch style? A bit rustic in a good way. Don't change the entry stairs to anything fancy or traditional. It won't "go".
Will your entry hall be dark without the side lites? Can you see the front porch from the interior anywhere else?

Consider that your kitchen is the vocal point of the home. I think the right grey would be beautiful, but you want to make sure that you are going with a light back splash and a marble or light granite. I would also suggest stainless steal appliances just to finish it off with a really clean look.

Where were you when the stone was delivered, and installed, and when the backsplash was installed? I always, ALWAYS recommend that the owner/buyer/payer be on site before any materials or components are accepted and/or installed. It avoids exactly this kind of problem.

A beach house really doesn't need such a huge walk-in closet. The third diagram works best for me: increase the size of that shower to 36x36" or more and bring the toilet forward in the water closet. The extra space can be used as a linen closet accessed from the hall or for a built-in safe or shoe shelving accessed from the bedroom.

Katie I just found a gray at Home Depot called Verathane wood stain in weathered gray.

This is on a piece of oak rift cut which we are trying to hide some of the rift in the wood. Its a cool gray.

Here is our final product! We opted for the "middle" grey, driftwood, and spray painted our old hardware! Thanks for your help. We LOVE how it turned out.

looks great! I have similar cabinets, may I ask what products you used? I am very sensitive to paint so trying to figure out if there is a non-VOC option to do this.

I used the milk paint from general finishes that I talked about earlier in this post! It worked so well and before I put a top coat on I spilled Apple pie on some paint, wiped it off with water and the paint stayed great!

Katie, the Driftwood looks really good. What color hardware are you doing?

Adding cabinet hardware will further update the look of your kitchen. Something like weathered nickel, polished chrome, or satin nickel would look amazing with the grey cabinet color. Take a look at some of our hardware and let us know if we can assist you with anything:
