For comparison, I got organic alfalfa pellets at Agway for $25 for 50 lb. bag. Alfalfa not labeled organic was somewhat less. I'm on Long Island, NY, so not rural up here.

Growing an organic lawn is less about fertilizing than it is about getting the soil into a good healthy condition so the soil can support a strong and healthy turf. At the prices I see on line, and at a recommended application rate of 10 pounds per 100 square feet all of these products will be very expensive.

How much organic matter is in the soil?

What sources of organic material do you have?

Do you mulch mow now? Those grass clippings can supply up to 1/2 the annual nitrogen requirements of the lawn.

As an aside on that, do any of you have a strong preference of alfalfa pellets, soybean meal or cotton meal? I guess if nothing else I'll see what's available and go from there.

As for my soil, the soil in general around here isn't good. Before putting down new sod in my backyard this spring I did till in a number of yards of compost. While my yard looks ok, the color and growth are uneven. I'd like to give things a little boost.

Because most people have diligently removed all of the organic material that soils need to be good and healthy most soils everywhere are not good. It takes about 10 tons of organic material per acre to raise the level of organic matter in soils 1 point, so use what you can find at the lowest cost.

I prefer the soybean meal for lawns.

Keep in mind that soybeans are one of the crops that are Genetically Engineered and the vast majority are. There are organic soybean meals available, however, but these may be even more expensive. For most organic growers Genetically Engineered Soybeans would not be acceptable for use even as a plant food.
