Our 50 year old front steps and sidewalk are waving the white flag of surrender. I need to replace the sidewalk and steps. I hate how small the landing area and steps are and would love to enlarge it, and we'll widen the sidewalk. My thoughts: how wide should the landing be - another foot to the entire width to the garage (making a porch)? If I don't extend it across, how far out from the edge of the house can I come? My biggest problem in the winter is the sunlight doesn't really hit the landing. I'd love to hear suggestions & any advice you have.

We have a 60's ranch house that I'm taking in a more modern / mid-century direction. Last summer we finished remodeling the kitchen/living/dining room, which included new siding and windows. We had to decrease the length of the kitchen windows (to the right of the front door) because we now have cabinetry on that wall on the inside -- I let the azaleas grow double their previous size because the windows looked small to me.

If I put in a porch, I could use a railing or a wooden slat wall which would bring the ground up closer to the windows, visually (it's two steps up to the door).

We will NOT be changing siding, windows, door color, door location, or window location. I will be removing/changing foundation plantings (and pruning in about a month).
