Hard to even guess without a closeup of the grain. The only thing I can come up with that is close in color is black walnut, but it looks strangely gray and not quite like black walnut. It may be an exotic, or something else that's been stained.

Actually someone tracked it down and discovered that it's a laminate. :-( Now I guess I'll have to ask my cabinetmaker to try to approximate it, maybe staining rift cut walnut or white oak.

Definitely laminate. Do you know the name of the laminate. It usually would contain the species that it is copying. I don't think white oak would be a good likeness.
