You know- I had the same thing happen with a variegated Aloe arborescens. The green version is a near weed..but that variegated hated too dry,too sunny,too..So,I put it back into a pot ( with garden soil clinging to the roots) and ..its thriving.

I'm hoping for better from Agapanthus..and it doesn't need to do much as far as fill a spot. Its for contrast.

The variegated agapanthus is a tough plant. I once divided and placed one section bare root in a pot. I intended to buy soil mix to pot it up but it turned into an experiment. Occasionally I would shoot it some water with a hose. Six months later, it was still looking healthy! I then potted the poor dear up.

They grew fine at our other house. This place has very sandy soil, with very little/no organic matter. I worked in a bunch of steer manure prior to planting, and the plants did fine for several years. But even though I top dress now, and occasionally fertilize, the soil must be depleted and it is difficult to work compost into the root zones at this point. Even the green agapanthus, which had bloomed for the first three years, no longer bloom. The interplanted hippeastrum bloom gangbuster-style though.

I have one called "Summer Sun" that has beautiful wide gold margins... It lights up the space. then my jap. maples (roots) took over and they dwindled. I saved a bunch which are now doing very nicely w/o root competition. Here they are under the maple before they turned to a bunch of small plants on lots of rhizomes. I took these out.

I haven't seen another one with the same wide yellow edges. I love this one.

It is so much more fountainy than any others. Not spiky. More like a Tarantula!

I plant the variegated ones in the shade down here in socal. Even if they don't flower prolifically there it's a good clean large leaf structure

HD just got in a whole load of them.
