Our main concern is how to match that yellow-orange floor. We love natural wood and I personally like it a little darker, medium color but... should we stain the cabinets also? If we stain (darken) the floor and the cabinets it will get more expensive, plus we are afraid that may not stain the same. There are three kinds of wood that need to be stained: the old floor with the new floor and the cabinets.

Our biggest dilemma: How exactly should we match that much wood? Floor with cabinets? Floor with countertops? Cabinets with what? Floor with furniture? Floor with what else?

Start with the floors. The same flooring throughout the level is the best if you can afford it. It is messy and you can work around the rest. I know it's easier to paint when it's empty but you won't know how your furnishings look in the space until you move in so you might not even need to paint especially if it is in good shape as you say.

Unless something is so terrible that you can't live with it for awhile just relax and live with the house for a period of time. Once you get settled in, I believe it will become clearer to you what you want to change and what has top priority.

Congratulations on your new home. Every thing costs money and time. Don't be afraid to take your time and do it once the right way.

Is this your forever home? if there is any chance you want to redo floors do it now. speaking from experience, we should have replaced all hardwood before we moved in, we knew we wanted to but waited and huge job after living here. you can do darker floors, in fact it would look better to not match cabinets, much easier to do something with them down the road

I would also suggest tackling the floors first. If you strip old, install new where you want it, and stain at the same time, it should match. I would suggest having someone do it for you if you can, especially if you are staining or haven't had much experience with finishing wood. (We sanded and refinished ours, my husband left quite a few lap marks that I had to fix...). It is a laborious task as DIY. If you have the finances, I would do that first. The finish needs time to cure and it's a much easier task do before everything is moved in.

I don't know that you have to have the cabinets match the floor. There are definitely kitchens I have seen that have had different woods or stain types, but once you get the floor done, I think you can then decide if you want to strip and stain the cabinets to match, if they look okay as is, or if you want to do something else with them. That's my .02 at least.

@wantsideas nailed it though: time and money. Make a list, budget out estimated costs, then work your way down the list as you have the time and money. Once you move in, you'll get an idea for what you want to change or not and how the space works for you. We have been in our first house for 3 years, and our "want/need" list has changed a lot from when we purchased to now. And having decided it's not our forever home, I'm sure it will change again. Be patient, have fun, and enjoy. Congrats on the new house (It looks very nice!)

Your cabinets do not have to match your floors. Concentrate on your flooring. If it's all hardwood, it can be refinished the same color at the same time.

Thank you so much! You really helped us decide. We will install the hardwood floor on the first level on as many rooms we can afford. We can stain it later if we don't have enough money now.

Paint the cabinets white, add new hardware and replace the granite blue tiles with a grey quarts solid surface.

If you are adding more hardwood, you would be missing the boat by not refinishing the whole thing. If money is the issue I would refinish whats there before adding any more rooms.

You won't need to match anything with your current floors if you have them sanded at the same time you install your new hardwood, so the entire first floor will have the same color flooring, a color of your choice. As long as the floor is darker than your cabinets, and a neutral brown (not too red or gold), it will look fine with them. Later, you can decide whether to keep your cabinets as is, or paint them, but it will still look good for now. Here's an example a medium color wood. It has some variation to bring in the lighter color of your cabinets.

Unless you know for sure that you want hardwood floors & the colour then I would do absolutely nothing for several weeks. I honestly feel you have to live in a space & get a real feel for what you love about the rooms; what needs changing straight away or what can wait. All the additions or replacements will be costly changes so you want to get it right from the beginning so enjoy your new home for awhile then make a priority list & take your time.

You have beautiful floors. A professional can match new floors easily. I would keep them light. The dark floors are so much harder to keep looking clean!

Do the floors before you move in.Keep the classic look. I agree with others that I would not do anything else until you have lived there for a while.

I would wait. Everything looks to be in excellent condition. Wait and then decide what you really want. It is cheaper to keep that carpeting for now.
