You have a beautiful home Jennifer! I don't have any advice but I'm sure you will get some great feedback. Can you tell me where you got your vases on top of your media center and the name of the wallpaper used inside the cabinet? I've been looking for that color in decor items. Thanks!

Loudon1 Our granite is St. Cecilia and the cabinets are an antique white (cream) color. When I get home later tonight, I'll take a close-up picture.

I also think your room is beautiful as is. If you want to make a change I might change out your sofa table to something longer and add an area rug in your seating area.

Yeah, your room looks great! I think you have the best layout with your current furniture even if your were to get a new entertainment center. I agree with Lila about an area rug in the seating area to pull everything together.

I agree with others who have commented, your home is lovely, the only thing I might suggest would be to get a large area rug to anchor the seating arrangement, I think the sharp contrast between the floor & the white sofa may be what is bugging you. Perhaps put the dining room furniture square to the wall rather than on an angle. I love the hanging lights in your kitchen would you mind sharing where you bought them.

I would just move your dining table square to the wall, so you have extra walkway space between the dining and seating areas. You could try the rug under your seating area instead of under the dining table. Otherwise, it looks great as it is. Your lighting is especially beautiful, and I love the round end table.

Update the entertainment center to a credenza for the TV to sit on. Park the table parallel to the dark wall. Get two new similar but not matching area rugs to anchor both the seating area and the dining. Dining rug should be 4' wider and longer than the table top. Living rug should slip under the front 1/3 of the sectional and extend past the ends by a foot or so. Should also allow the front 1/3 of the chair to sit on it. Add color with the rug to contrast with the flooring. When budget allows, increase the size of the dining table. It is small in comparison with the tray ceiling and chandy. I think you could use a round table there, taking the current table to the breakfast area.

I agree with deco about trading the entertainment center for a long credenza. I think I disagree about squaring up the dining table. Having it at an angle adds interest. You could use a longer dining area rug so the head chairs don't fall off when scooted out.

Now to your original dilemma: what's not working with the seating arrangement? If the person in the chair with ottoman has trouble seeing the TV, losing the top part of the entertainment center will take care of that.

grover, don't you agree that the chandy and ceiling require a larger table and that a round one would be the ticket?

In a complete open concept like this you really need a rug to define the living room spsace. To my eyes there is too much going on overall in terms of pattern and accesories. Id simplify and edit. Id also tweak some of the chandeliers to something that takes up less visual space. Im not sure they all play nicely with each other. I think the couch is great though. Id maybe consider an ivory instead of the stark white.

So I would edit out the sofa table and everything on it, the candle sticks on ottoman, the candlesticks on dining table, and the oversize wall clock. That alone would really elevate the room IMO.

Maybe a larger round table, deco, but they're on a budget and I think the angled table works. I also don't think a rug is required in the TV area; that space is defined by the seating.

I do find all the lights a bit of an overload, but that could be because they're all on at the same time. I would lose the clock and whatever that arrangement is on the wall at the end of the stair. Maybe the clock could go at the end of the stair, and art could replace the clock.

I was relating the round table to a future purchase that would be more in keeping with the architecture and chandelier. My vision of rugs was to warm the cold look of the tile floor. Unless the tile is heated, I wouldn't want to walk on or sit with my feet on it in cold weather. But maybe this is a FL home. I'm ignoring clocks these days. They are ubiquitous and people seem to love them, even though I don't. If the OP did nothing but replace the mirror and clock with real art, the room would jump to an entirely different level.

Frostedsleet The vases on top of the media center are from Stein Mart. As for the wallpaper, it is actually custom linen wrapping paper I ordered from Zazzle. I've had it about three years and it has held up very well.

Much prefer the room without the large cabinet which seemed dated.
I so agree with an area rug to add warmth and layering to your TV area.
Clock is a bit 'done' but it does work in this space. When budget allows look at replacing it.
The wall behind the TV is begging to become an accent wall. Maybe a shade or two lighter than that gray wall?

I like your spaces. I would not agree to removing the top of your entertainment unit. It is nice that the TV is in a logical place, not too high, and it is somewhat camouflaged by the surrounding shelves.
There are a lot of dilemmas here in which posters think the walls look bare around a big flat screen tv. It is a bit ironic.
I suspect that in the future, people will want to once again close doors over a "black hole".
I agree that a rug would unify the tv area.

We purchased a rug and ended up returning as it didn't really add anything to the room. This is the rug that we had bought and returned, but it may have been to stark of a contrast with the white sofa. What color and/or type of rug should we look for? I really like decoenthusiaste's idea of similar but not matching area rugs to anchor both the seating area and the dining area.

We had this unit built for our former home and it was simply awful to move to our new house. It is gigantic and cluttered, (not yet unpacked everything and redone) but it is so nice to close the doors and not see the big black hole staring at us! It is in two pieces, but I would never remove the top and have the tv exposed. Plus where would I put all the stuff?

I would not go patterned with the rug.
The original rug you bought might have fought with your curtains.
I think a tonal grey rug would work, something that does not stand out but quietly pulls things together.
Try and find a rug that adds texture and warmth as opposed to colour.

I would use sisal or jute rug in the tv area and also the dining area. That would add warmth, define the areas without adding business, and goes with your style . Still think a little de-accesorizing would look great too.

Add a jute rug, change the armchair to a recliner with no ottoman in gray or cognac leather to add warmth, change TV console to a smaller one in a different color than white, maybe a white washed/ reclaimed wood to give a beachy look. Lastly, if budget allows, change coffee table to a square shaped one in a lighter color.

I like that, but keep in mind the length of your wall. Since you are doing away with the height you don't want it to seem too small in proportion to the space. Something a little wider would work. I like TV on the wall idea.

Per the suggestions to replace the clock with artwork, I have been looking for something to replace the clock and possibly another piece to go in the dining area in place of the two mirrors. Here are a few I like. Am I going in the right direction, or should be looking for something different altogether?

Beautiful space! With all those table surfaces nearby, I wonder if you could eliminate the sofa table and move the sofa back a bit. That would give you more room in the seating area and it would have more impact.

I read where the repeat of shapes and colors brings cohesion to a space. But in this case I believe there is too much repeat of shapes. The areas are very nice though. I would love to see the turquoise painting on dark wall and move round mirror to wall across from stairs. Agree about hanging TV and getting long console for below TV.

Has anyone mentioned the ottoman? I think that is what makes the chair feel awkward. Put the ottoman against the wall by the TV and pull the chair in toward the grouping.

Other than that (and a rug) I love this room. I wouldn't change a thing.

Would it be feasible to change out white switch plates on black wall. Will make wall more dramatic IMO.

All great suggestions and fairly easy to do. Love the idea of moving the ottoman against the wall by the TV, allowing more room for the chair to be moved towards the grouping. Eliminating the sofa table and changing out white switch places are great suggestions as well. Thank you!

Another thought. Might consider the run in the living area a sisal with black tape border trying to keep color of sisal close to dining area rug color. . . "the same but different" as suggested above.

Another wonderful thought, thank you Seajaygerns! We currently have the Geneve rug from Ballard in ivory/dark brown. Perhaps a sisal rug with a dark brown border -to coordinate with the dark brown pattern in our current rug?

Jennifer. Absolutely. It's reads black on my iPad. What color is the dark accent wall. Sometimes it appears black but I originally thought it looked dark blue.

The accent wall is Hale Navy from Benjamin Moore.

Here are just a few suggestions from our designs. Try adding a jute rug (under the angled rug) and use a credenza for the TV.

Hi Jennifer, first of all, you have a beautiful home. As for the family area. Have you considered running the couch and love seat parallel to each other? I agree with the others regarding a rug or possibly smaller accent chairs instead of the chair and ottoman. Where the TV is, your stand looks lovely, however, all the elements in the room are very weighted. I would suggest a wall mount centered between the two parallel couches (if space allows) and adding a panel molding or wainscot detail around the TV. You can paint inside the squares in your accent blue to tie in that wall.
